The race for Minnesota's Senate seat is entering critical territory. Incumbent Senator Tina Smith's decision to forgo a reelection bid created a power vacuum unseen in recent state history.
Both parties navigated intense primary battles that ultimately set up a high-profile matchup between two well-known figures: Democrat Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya.
In prediction markets, traders continue to price Flanagan as a clear favorite in a historically blue state, but recent polling presents a far more volatile, razor-thin contest heading into November 3. Here is a breakdown of where the market stands and what could unfold in the coming weeks.

The Minnesota Senate Odds
On Kalshi, the trading board could not be clearer. For months, Peggy Flanagan has held a commanding lead, hovering between 87% and 90% implied probability, an abysmal gap for her Republican challenger.
These figures point to a contest that appears all but decided, leaving little room for late-game upsets. However, traditional polling suggests a far tighter trajectory that could become increasingly prominent throughout October.
The race reached its first major turning point at midyear, when Smith’s retirement announcement triggered an immediate realignment in fundraising expectations and media exposure.
While Minnesota previously stood as dependable territory for the incumbent party, Tafoya’s entry gave Republicans a high-profile candidate capable of going toe-to-toe across the Twin Cities media market, posing a direct threat to long-standing Democratic dominance.
The Polls Tell a Different Story
Several surveys conducted among Minnesota voters during the final weeks of September paint a far more competitive picture. While Flanagan maintained a lead in many of them, polls from InsiderAdvantage and co/efficient showed her advantage shrinking to a single point.
Even more concerning for Democrats, a SurveyUSA poll had the candidates locked in a dead tie, while a second co/efficient survey showed the Republican contender pulling ahead by one point. In short, pollsters are signaling a neck-and-neck race, driven by an undecided electorate that has yet to firmly settle on either candidate.
First and foremost, this opens a clear trading opportunity in a market on the verge of entering a highly volatile period. While Tafoya's Yes shares are showing signs of a subtle surge, they continue to trade at just 12 cents. If recent polling numbers bear any real weight, her valuation in prediction markets could see significant upward pressure as Election Day approaches.
The Candidates: Established Record or Moderate Conservatism?
Peggy Flanagan enters the race as an established figure within the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) state apparatus. As Minnesota's lieutenant governor since 2019, she brings a profile deeply tied to working-family causes, labor rights and Indigenous representation.
Her tenure in the state House of Representatives and her alignment with the state administration give her the direct backing of union and progressive bases across Minnesota, alongside the full support of the party electoral infrastructure that has dominated state politics in recent years.
On the other hand, Michele Tafoya enters the political arena as a widely recognized face outside the traditional party establishment. Following a three-decade career on national television networks as a sports reporter, Tafoya has built a platform anchored in moderate conservatism.
Her profile resonates with voters weary of career politicians, positioning her as an independent thinker focused on fiscal discipline, the cost of living, and community safety.
What Are Traders Pricing In?
The pollsters’ razor-thin gap has not yet manifested in prediction market odds. Traders continue to price in broader structural factors, placing heavy weight on the incumbent party's organizational power and the region's decades-long history of leaning toward Democratic candidates.
For many traders, these macroeconomic and historical fundamentals carry more weight than individual polling snapshots, which they often view as narrow depictions that miss the broader picture. Still, the statistical divergence is real, and the Republican Party is likely to capitalize on these tight polling numbers to aggressively back Tafoya and contest this critical Senate seat.
