The USMNT faces Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi’s Stadium in a Round of 32 game that the country will stop to watch. After an excellent start to their World Cup, it’s fair to say that America expects, but will Bosnia be able to ruin the hosts’ party?

USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Betting Preview
In the third group game, a late Turkiye goal gave the USMNT their first defeat at this World Cup. However, Mauricio Pochettino had rested most of the starting lineup with the top spot already secured. The defeat had no material impact, although you could argue that it potentially knocked the confidence of some of those second-string players, who could be needed from the bench in the Bay.
The key news is that Christian Pulisic is set to return to the starting lineup for the first time (calf injury) since the opening game, and his presence will be a huge boost. The fact that so many of the team’s better players didn’t play in that third game should also mean that they’re fresh and ready to go.
The USMNT’s 4-2-3-1 has been consistent, but it’s the left flank, with the excellent Antonee Robinson at left back and Pulisic ahead, that offers the real threat, and both men have the talent to supply Folarin Balogun with plenty of chances.
USA's Projected Starting Lineup
- Goalkeeper: Matt Freese
- Defenders: Miles Robinson, Tim Ream, Chris Richards, Alex Freeman
- Wingbacks: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie
- Midfielders: Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, Sergino Dest
- Forwards: Folarin Balogun
USMNT Pick: USA Spread Prediction
The USMNT really needs to be careful of Bosnia. This isn’t an attractive side, and they won’t win many fans with their brand of soccer, but they work hard and are more than capable of frustrating any opponent. They were underdogs against both Wales and Italy in the playoffs to reach the World Cup and upset both, and they upset Canada in the opener, with that game finishing level.
However, their only win was against a Qatar team that lacks talent. The USMNT is far superior in both quality and athleticism, which will be the key factor here. Bosnia aren’t blessed with pace, and their central defensive duo of Nikola Katic and Stjepan Radeljic aren’t quick, even if they are strong and physical. Katic, in particular, is somebody the USA can attack. He is a no-nonsense player, but it gets him in trouble. He’s only been booked once so far, but in those two knockout playoff games to reach the World Cup, he averaged 3.5 fouls per game.
The Bosnians will be tough to break down, and they’ll sit back, soaking up pressure in their 4-4-2, looking to hit the USMNT on the counter. My biggest worry with the US is how the defense, more specifically Tim Ream, will deal with extreme pace, but fortunately this shouldn’t be an issue here, and having Robinson and Chris Richards on either side will be enough.
I’m expecting Bosnia to be tough to break down, but this is a USMNT that looks comfortable on the ball and following Pochettino’s instructions. The USA has the confidence to unlock Bosnia without getting frustrated. This won’t be a rout, but once they open the scoring, they should be able to get another — or more — in what should end up being a comfortable win for the USMNT.
