Is sports betting legal in Georgia?

No. Georgia has no legal sportsbooks, online or retail, and no licensing framework to create any. Every licensed US sportsbook runs a geolocation check before accepting a wager and will refuse it if you are in Georgia.

Georgia is also one of the most restrictive gambling states in the country. There are no casinos, commercial or tribal, no pari-mutuel horse racing and no legal online casino. The Georgia Lottery, which voters authorized by constitutional amendment in 1992, is effectively the only regulated gambling in the state - and that fact is the root of the legal argument that has stalled sports betting for a decade.

What gambling is legal in Georgia?

The last two rows matter more than they look. Neither category is licensed, regulated or supervised by any Georgia authority. They operate in a gap in the law, which is a different thing from being legal, and it means the consumer protections that come with regulation do not apply. 

Are Prediction Markets like Kalshi legal in Georgia?

Yes, federally regulated prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket are available in Georgia. 

They allow anyone to trade contracts on sporting outcomes and are accessible in many places across the US, including those with no legal sportsbook. They are Designated Contract Markets regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which is the basis on which they operate nationwide rather than state by state.

They are not however, Georgia-licensed sportsbooks and no state consumer protection applies. Pricing works differently from sportsbook odds - contracts trade between roughly 1c and 99c against other users rather than against a book. And the national legal position is unsettled: several states have tried to block them and generally lost on federal preemption grounds, but the rulings remain outstanding.

Why does Georgia keeps failing to legalize sports betting?

Because the pro-legalization coalition breaks in two directions at once. Georgia has never had a straightforward for-and-against split on gambling, and the March 2026 vote showed exactly how the arithmetic fails.

Georgia's constitution restricts gambling, with a carve-out for the state lottery added by voters in 1992. That creates two competing theories about how sports betting could be authorized, and legislators have spent years trying both.

The amendment route was tested on Crossover Day 2026 and failed by a wide margin. That matters beyond the single vote, because it is the route that answers the constitutional objection - and it turns out to be the harder one to pass, needing 29 more votes than a statute.

Has anything changes recently with gambling in Georgia?

Yes, but it has not changed the situation. House Resolution 450 would have sent betting proceeds to a dedicated fund for pre-K and other educational programs, with a portion set aside for addiction prevention and treatment. It received 63 votes in favor and 98 against - barely half the 120 needed.

Crossover Day is the deadline for a measure to clear its originating chamber and keep a realistic path to becoming law. Failing on that day ended it for the session, which adjourned on April 2.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks trace back to 1946, when they entered the National Basketball League as the Buffalo Bisons before moving 38 days later and becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Atlanta Braves

Founded in 1871, the Braves are the oldest continuously operating professional franchise in American sports and one of two remaining National League charter members. They have been in Atlanta since 1966, have four World Series titles with the most recent in 2021, and play at Truist Park, now in its tenth season.

Brian Snitker stepped down after 2025, ending a ten-year run that produced 811 wins, six division titles and the 2021 championship. Longtime bench coach Walt Weiss took over. Atlanta United FC

Founded in 2014 and an expansion side from 2017, Atlanta United set league records for average and single-match attendance almost immediately and won MLS Cup in only its second season, the city's first major championship since the Braves in 1995. The club plays at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta Dream

appearances, reaching three Finals in four years from 2010. They remain the Southeast's only WNBA franchise.Karl Smesko has changed the trajectory quickly. Georgia Tech claims four national championships and 16 conference titles, with John Heisman and Bobby Dodd among its former coaches. The Yellow Jackets play at Bobby Dodd Stadium on campus in Atlanta.

Brent Key delivered the program's most exciting season in years in 2025. Tech opened 8–0, its best start since 1966, climbed to seventh in the AP poll on the back of a last-second field goal to beat Clemson, then lost four of its final five and fell 25–21 to BYU in the Pop-Tarts Bowl to finish 9–4. Quarterback Haynes King won ACC Player of the Year but is out of eligibility, and Key enters his fourth full season with a new offensive coordinator in former Tech quarterback George Godsey.

Georgia State only began playing in 2010 and moved to the Sun Belt in 2012, enjoying its best stretch under Shawn Elliott with two bowl wins. The Panthers play at Center Parc Stadium in downtown Atlanta.

The Dell McGee era has been difficult. After 3–9 in his first season, Georgia State went 1–11 in 2025 and 0–8 in the Sun Belt, having been picked last in the East division in the preseason poll. McGee enters year three needing visible progress.

Georgia Southern won six FCS national titles and 10 Southern Conference championships before moving up to the Sun Belt in 2014. The Eagles play at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro.

College Basketball Betting in Georgia

Georgia Bulldogs Men's Basketball

Georgia basketball has long trailed its football program, with a single Final Four in 1983, when the Bulldogs beat both Chris Mullin's St. John's and Michael Jordan's North Carolina before losing to eventual champion NC State. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Men's Basketball

Like their in-state counterpart Georgia, Georgia Tech has never won the NCAA Tournament but reached the final in 2004, losing to Connecticut, and made the Final Four in 1990. The Yellow Jackets play at McCamish Pavilion and have reached one NCAA Tournament since 2010.

Damon Stoudamire was fired in March 2026 a day after an 11–20 season ended with 12 straight losses and a last-place ACC finish at 2–16. Georgia Tech moved quickly, hiring Scott Cross from Troy on a five-year deal. Cross has 350 career Division I wins and seven conference titles, and took Troy to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Georgia State Panthers Men's Basketball

Georgia State has historically been the state's strongest mid-major, with NCAA Tournament trips in 2015 and 2019 and the memorable upset of Baylor. The Panthers play at the GSU Convocation Center in Atlanta.

Georgia Southern Eagles Men's Basketball

Georgia Southern competes in the Sun Belt and won four of its five regular-season conference titles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Eagles moved out of Hanner Fieldhouse and into the new Hill Convocation Center in Statesboro during the 2024–25 season.

Charlie Henry has improved the team in each of his three years, going 21–16 and 8–10 in conference play in 2025–26.

Unlike the three other major championships in golf, the Masters is held at Augusta National Golf Club every year. It was established in 1934 and has the smallest field of the major championships. The winner of the tournament is awarded the famed green jacket each year.

You simply cannot place new ones, and you do not need a separate account per state - the major operators run one account nationally and switch to whichever legal market you are in.

Taxes on out-of-state betting winnings for Georgia residents

Georgia taxes gambling winnings as income, including winnings from bets placed in Tennessee, Florida or North Carolina. Where you have paid income tax to another state on the same winnings, Georgia allows a credit so the income is not taxed twice, capped at what Georgia would have charged.

The interaction with the two most likely destinations is worth knowing. Tennessee and Florida have no state income tax, so nothing is withheld at state level and you have no credit to claim - Georgia taxes those winnings in full. North Carolina does tax the income, at a flat 3.99% from January 1, 2026, which gives you something to offset.

The counter-intuitive result is that the no-income-tax states leave you with the larger Georgia bill, because nothing has been paid along the way.

Federal changes for 2026

• Gambling losses are deductible at only 90% of their value for tax years beginning January 1, 2026. Because they remain capped at your winnings, you can owe federal tax on a break-even year.

• The general W-2G reporting threshold is now $2,000, and 24% withholding applies to winnings of $5,000 or more at odds of 300-1 or longer.

• You report gross winnings, not net profit - the most common error by some distance.

• You only get the loss deduction if you itemize. Most filers take the standard deduction and get no offset at all, which matters more to a casual bettor than the 90% cap does.

Winnings from an offshore book are taxable and reportable in exactly the same way. The illegality of the wager does not exempt the income - but the operator will not issue a W-2G, withhold anything or give you an exportable history, so the reporting burden sits entirely with you.
