Padres vs. Reds Odds & Betting Predictions - September 1, 2026

We’re backing Cincinnati to be tied or leading after five innings, primarily because Randy Vásquez remains one of the biggest regression candidates in baseball. Vásquez’s 4.02 ERA does not accurately reflect how poorly he really is as a pitcher. He owns a 5.69 xERA, with his FIP, xFIP and SIERA all sitting considerably higher than his surface ERA. He generates very few strikeouts, and his underlying contact profile is alarming. Opponents have produced a 43.9% hard hit rate and 10.2% barrel rate, while his walk rate remains another concern. When hitters make contact against Vásquez, they consistently hit the ball with power. Those warning signs become even more concerning at Great American Ball Park, one of MLB’s most favorable environments for hitters and home runs. Nick Lodolo has unquestionably struggled this season, posting a 5.24 ERA, but I still believe he is the more talented pitcher in this matchup. Last season, Lodolo recorded a 3.33 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 156.2 innings, showing the level he is capable of reaching when executing properly. Lodolo’s biggest weakness has historically been facing left handed hitters, but San Diego does not have enough left handed bats to fully exploit that matchup. Against a predominantly right handed Padres lineup, I’m comfortable trusting his arsenal and underlying talent for the first five innings.
