Tigers vs Twins Preview

Detroit Tigers

Framber Valdez is off to a strong start with his new team. The veteran lefty has continued rolling up ground balls at a high rate in 2026 to mitigate the risk of dropping strikeout totals.

After allowing a solid .266 Expected wOBA in spring training, he's at a comfortable .251 through two starts versus the Padres and Cardinals.

Of course, those two outings have come in friendly pitching environments like his home turf in Detroit and Petco Park out in San Diego, and he'll step into one of the hitter-friendliest parks in Minnesota on Wednesday.

The good news is that not only can a ground-ball pitcher usually be ballpark-proof, but Minnesota's high Park Factor from offense is driven by base hits and doubles.

However, the Tigers' infield did rank just 20th in Outs Above Average last year and is off to a 21st-place this season, so it's far from a guarantee that results will stick for Valdez.

Action PRO projects him for 5.5 strikeouts tonight.

Thus far, Valdez has at least pitched to a neat 6.1% walk rate, keeping up with a long trend of expert control, and his Expected Slugging is down around 90 points from a tough .370 mark in 2025, but it's early, so we'll do nothing more than keep tabs there.

Minnesota Twins

Bailey Ober, the enemy of birds, has allowed 57 home runs across the last two seasons with the Twins. The 30 he coughed up last season ranked third in the American League, and it doesn't seem like much will change on account of the righty's consistently high fly ball rate, which is 10 points higher than the league average over the course of his career.

It's not like he has a favorable home park, either, considering his home runs allowed per nine and home run-to-fly ball ratios were nearly identical on the road last year as well.

So, this game is going to come down to whether or not the Tigers can put the ball in the seats when they inevitably put it in the air.

So far, they haven't done that with the second-lowest HR/FB ratio in the league, though last season they did fare far better versus fly-ball pitchers, so perhaps there's some hope of a turnaround here.

The unfortunate news for Ober is that the Tigers are striking out at the ninth-highest clip in the league thus far, with a robust 11.3% walk rate, and their poor discipline will surely be aided by Ober and his low strikeout totals over the last two seasons.

His strikeout rate was south of 20% last season, and is at a measly 14.3% in the early going. He's never been one to walk a ton of batters, thankfully, but we'll see if the lack of punchouts hurts him.

Tigers vs Twins Picks

The Tigers may be failing to hit for power at the moment — or hit in general — but Wednesday's matchup features a ton of promise. They'll get to tee off on a fly ball pitcher — something they strongly preferred last season — and they'll also head to a park that's much friendlier to fly balls.

The number of bets and percentage of money show increasing support for Detroit heading into tonight's game.

The wind will also be blowing out to center here, leading more credence to our handicap, and without much of a strikeout risk, Detroit should see some great run-scoring opportunities.

On the flip side, while I see some potential issues with Valdez going forward on account of his poor defense, I do think the Twins are in a rough enough spot here to firmly favor Detroit.

They've struck out at the fifth-highest clip in baseball, and they've leaned heavily on a 12% walk rate, which is sure to drop against the stingy Valdez.

With just a .211 average and .135 Isolated Power, the lefty should continue to cruise as he picks up another win for his new teammates.

Pick: Tigers ML (-150, BetMGM)
