Colgate vs Florida College Basketball Betting Preview
Ah, the meaningless late December 12 p.m. ET Sunday tilt. College basketball at its finest.
The Florida Gators host just their fourth buy game of the season as they get some reprieve from a brutal non-conference schedule. Meanwhile, Colgate heads on the road for its third battle with a top-15 power squad.
Florida has smashed inferior competition this season, beating its three sub-150 KenPom opponents by 40, 35 and 41. While Colgate is better than those three softies, the defending national champs are an intimidating bunch with one of the best frontcourts in the country.
That frontcourt will fuel a glass beatdown, as the Gators rank No. 2 nationally in offensive rebounding rate while Colgate ranks 309th in defensive rebounding rate.
Michigan State and Illinois both grabbed 19 offensive rebounds against the Raiders (nearly half their misses). The Spartans won the glass battle 47 to 25. The Illini won 49 to 29. Florida should have no trouble grabbing 15+ offensive boards and winning the rebounding margin by 20+.
Guard play is Florida’s limiting factor. The offense can get awkward and become very reliant on Xaivian Lee and Boogie Fland dribbling, prodding and creating.
It shouldn’t matter as much against a less athletic, less quick Colgate perimeter, but it’s still a potential capper on Florida’s ability to blow this game open.
The Raiders hung with Michigan State and Illinois, losing by 11 and 19, respectively, despite the rebounding blood bath. Matt Langel is a good coach, and the Raiders play rock solid basketball.
Expect Colgate to try to make this a half-court game and run Jalen Cox – a point guard not much worse than Lee – off a ton of ball screens.
The Gators have been awful defending the pick-and-roll this year, ranking 347th in points per possession allowed to pick-and-roll ball handlers and 255th in PPP allowed to rollers.
But Colgate won’t get anything in the post, an area it tries to run offense through. Sam Wright and Andrew Alekseyenko are solid bigs, but Florida is so deep and much larger.
If the Raiders aren’t hitting outside shots, they’re toast. They won’t turn the ball over, but they aren’t getting any second chances or easy looks.
Florida should extend this game in the second half and ultimately cruise to a big win as it overwhelms the Raiders on the glass with its size.
My Pick: Florida -29.5
