Georgetown vs UConn College Basketball Betting Preview
Georgetown Basketball
The Hoyas haven't posted a Big East record over .500 since 2015, a lifetime ago in college sports. This season, Georgetown fans may have found some hope early in the season, but those hopes were quickly dashed by a seven-game losing streak in conference play.
The Hoyas sat at just 1-7 in the Big East on January 22, seemingly coasting again towards the bottom of the league.
That's especially notable this season, when the Big East is at its lowest point in years.
The conference is likely to get just three teams into the NCAA Tournament, with six of the 11 teams outside KenPom's top 75 — the most Big East teams since the conference was shaken by realignment in 2014.
Georgetown, to its credit, responded and bounced back with four straight wins. Victories on the road at Providence and Butler were particularly noteworthy, though Georgetown remains 0-4 against the Big East teams likely to make the Big Dance and just 1-6 against all teams projected into the field.
The Hoyas struggle to beat good teams because the Hoyas are incredibly flawed. Ed Cooley's offense is carried by his backcourt: Malik Mack and KJ Lewis.
Both are smaller guards who struggle to stay efficient offensively. They combine to take over nine 3s per game, and make just 2.9 of those attempts (30.8%). Inside the arc as dribble-drivers, the duo is worse.
Both shoot under 45% inside the arc and under 48% at the rim, among the bottom 10 percentiles in college hoops, per Hoop-Explorer.
This is a clunky game plan for a team playing at the slowest tempo in the Big East. The shot quality leaves little variance in the small sample size of a 66-possession game (on average) to outperform a more talented team.
UConn Basketball
UConn didn't lose a game between November 19 and February 6. In the midst of that 18-game winning streak, this was one of the hottest teams in the sport.
If you squinted at UConn's performances and results, there were slight signs that its ceiling was unsustainable.
First, the back half of the streak came against the Big East, which, as mentioned, is down this season.
The Huskies went a full month without playing a team that would make the NCAA Tournament. The early portion of the win streak featured resume builders over Illinois, Kansas, Florida and Texas.
After that, the Big East slate didn't offer much resistance. UConn didn't play a top-25 team (by AP Poll or KenPom) over a 12-game stretch.
The lone at-large likely team in that span was Villanova, which UConn beat in overtime in a game the Wildcats should've wrapped up in regulation.
Beyond the level of competition, UConn wasn't winning those games convincingly. The Huskies needed overtime twice (Villanova and Providence), beat Georgetown by just two and topped Seton Hall and Providence by just two possessions.
Now, it's important to remember: We're nitpicking an 18-game winning streak. This team very much has the talent to make a deep run into April again this season. The road loss at St. John's to break that streak came in the building of the second-best team in the Big East.
These Huskies have five guys scoring in double figures on a nightly basis and four players hitting at least one 3-pointer per game.
Tarris Reed Jr. is a dominant big man on the block and is backed up by Eric Reibe, a seven-footer who came to campus as a top-30 recruit in the country.
Oh, and UConn has a coach who knows a thing or two about peaking in March.
Don't lose sleep worrying about the Huskies.
Georgetown vs. UConn Betting Analysis
This total is set oddly low, to the point that it feels fishy to those considering betting the under.
In 24 games this season, Georgetown and its opponents have failed to reach 136 points just five times. That's not cherry picking the stat either. Just five of 24 Georgetown games have been under 141 total points.
UConn has had 10 of 25 games stay under 136 and 12 of 25 under 140, but both of those samples include games against New Haven, Bryant and Big East bottom-feeder DePaul.
Six straight UConn games have topped 142 total points, including the last three games over 150.
Unless you're afraid of regression swinging the other way, the over is the play here.
These teams are both scoring enough to confidently take that bet. Georgetown is averaging 73.4 points per game over its last 15, and UConn is over 80 per game in its last 10.
