Gonzaga Basketball

Gonzaga visits Corvallis Saturday night, fresh off a bizarre loss to Portland. The Zags were 22-point favorites but fell to the Purple Pilots in a game that really wasn’t all that close. Anything can happen in college basketball — and anything certainly did on Wednesday.

The rational thought would be that the Zags are hungry to bounce back and mercilessly defeat the next poor, helpless opponent in their wake. However, the Zags really haven’t looked great lately, failing to cover their last four games.

Injuries to Braden Huff and Graham Ike have stalled their momentum, though Ike returned two games ago against the Gaels. With Ike back in the fold, Gonzaga should have an edge on the glass on Saturday.

Oregon State will still struggle to stop one of the most efficient interior offenses in the country, even with its zone looks. That said, Gonzaga’s guards are not elite by any stretch. Mark Few’s backcourt doesn’t make many mistakes, but it’s also not as dynamic as some of his past guard groups.

Oregon State Basketball

Oregon State is no pushover and, in fact, has shown countless times under Wayne Tinkle its ability to land haymakers. The Beavers took down Gonzaga in overtime at home last season before losing by 38 in Spokane two weeks later.

Oregon State likes to use a lot of junk zones that can confuse opponents, but those looks also leave the glass vulnerable to easy put-backs. Tinkle will likely utilize plenty of zone to help limit the Bulldogs from playing through Ike on the block.

The Beavers are looking to win and cover their fourth straight game, and they’ve achieved success in the last three without the services of 6-foot-11 forward Yaak Yaak.

Tinkle knows what it takes to hang with Gonzaga — he'll need to make this game a total muckfest and take the air out of the ball. Taking the air out of the ball is something he does as well as any coach in the country.

Like Gonzaga, Oregon State likes to get post touches on most possessions, but its best source of offense this season has been the free-throw line, where it ranks top-20 nationally (and No. 1 in the WCC) in rate.

It’s very difficult to score inside against an elite Gonzaga defense, so shooting and guard play will be key for the Beavers, as well.

Oregon State is ultimately a jump-shot-reliant offense, and it has capable shooters in guards Josiah Lake II, Isaiah Sy and Dez White. They’ll look to break down the Gonzaga defense with the pass — not the dribble — and free themselves for looks off screens.

As usual for a Tinkle team, expect plenty of hustle plays and sustained effort.

Gonzaga vs Oregon State Betting Analysis

This spread is huge, and given each team’s current form, it’s too big.

Oregon State can keep this one reasonably close and send the Zags home scratching their heads, wondering why they couldn’t blow out the middling Oregon schools on their short road trip.

My Pick: Oregon State +18.5
