Liberty vs NC State College Basketball Picks
With McNeese, Will Wade ran a havoc-based, triple-switch defense that flew around the court, forced turnovers, and protected the rim better than almost any college basketball squad.
This NC State squad has yet to reproduce those results.
The Wolfpack have slipped outside the top 80 nationally in defensive efficiency. They’re still allowing an extremely high 3-point rate (nearly 50%, among the 10 highest marks nationally), but they’re not protecting the rim nearly as well (52% 2-point shooting allowed, 176th nationally).
Meanwhile, Liberty’s offense is a firecracker.
Ritchie McKay has always run a lovely motion-based offense. This year’s squad features three elite shot-making guards who can initiate ball-screens (Collin Porter is expected to play, by the way), surrounding the ever-elite, do-it-all forward Zach Cleveland.
I expect Liberty’s offense to operate to its full efficiency here, touching paint-to-perimeter with ease — the Flames rank in the top 10 nationally in 2-point shooting, 3-point shooting, and turnover rate.
While the Flames are a small, unathletic bunch that will get roasted on the defensive end (although Cleveland might be able to match up alright with Darrion Williams), I think they can go shot-for-shot with the ‘Pack in a single-digit loss.
Regardless, I only project NC State as an 8.9-point favorite, and would bet the Flames at +12 or better.
