Miami Basketball

Miami is entering the first true road game of the Jai Lucas era. The Hurricanes are 6-2, and their two losses came to BYU and Florida as double-digit underdogs.

Defense is the calling card for the first year of the Lucas era in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes rank 27th in KenPom's defensive efficiency. They want to push the tempo (97th in adjusted tempo) and can run since they force turnovers 20% of the time.

That's why the pace will likely decide the outcome here. If the game is played at the Rebels' pace, that means the game is in the half-court. Not only is that where Ole Miss is more comfortable, but the Canes' offense is a bit clunky in that setting.

Miami's unwillingness to shoot 3s really shows in the half-court. It attempts 3s on just 30% of its field goal attempts, but 36% of them connect.

Three of the Hurricanes' five starters are either non-shooters (Ernest Udeh Jr.) or low-volume shooters (Malik Reneau and Shelton Henderson).

The floor spacing can get ugly, and teams will gladly dare Reneau to shoot if he's floating by the arc. That's a great tradeoff since Reneau is a big, burly southpaw that averages over 20 points per game.

The two starting guards — Tru Washington and Tre Donaldson — can both hit jumpers, and they'll have to in this matchup.

Ole Miss Basketball

Ole Miss was one of the clear losers of Feast Week. There’s no shame in losing to Iowa, but losing as close to double-digit favorites to Utah is a bit worrisome.

Defense was the issue in both games, as Iowa scored 1.16 PPP versus the Rebels, and Utah scored 1.15.

It was a different particular reason as to why Ole Miss struggled in both games.

In the Iowa game, Bennett Stirtz went off for the Hawks, and sometimes great players just make things happen. The Hawkeyes also got to the foul line 24 times.

Meanwhile, in the second game, the Utes went 10-of-19 from downtown.

In three games versus top-125 opponents, the Rebels allowed 1.13 PPP or more in each outing. Chris Beard is known for coaching good defensive teams, so that's a bit different.

It's not all bad, though. The Rebels hold teams to 46% shooting from inside the arc, which is odd because bad defensive teams are usually worse at holding teams from scoring inside.

Ole Miss is a solid offensive squad, ranking 43rd in efficiency on that end of the floor. I honestly think Ole Miss should shoot more 3s. Only 35% of the Rebels' shots come from deep, but their lineup has more marksmen than interior scorers.

French point guard Ilias Kamardine has been a joy to watch. The 6-foot-5 guard is an exceptional passer, but don't sleep on his scoring. He shoots an efficient 55% from the field and 39% from 3.

Kamardine and AJ Storr have developed into a nice scoring duo in Oxford. Storr has found his confidence again, averaging 14 points per game and shooting 55% from the field. I'm a big fan of the shot-creation of that pair.

Coach Beard has to find a clear fourth and fifth option behind Kamardine, Storr and forward Malik Dia. Freshman wing Patton Pinkins scored 14 in the win over Utah, so he should get more of a role. The lineup has too much deadweight with guys like Travis Perry playing 20+ minutes per game.

Pace will be a big factor in the outcome of this game. Beard wants a more cerebral approach with Kamardine being able to dissect defenses with high terrific pick-and-roll play.

Miami vs. Ole Miss Betting Analysis

I'm going with Ole Miss laying the points.

For one, Miami has destroyed weak opponents and handled an undermanned Georgetown squad. What else have the Hurricanes shown to belong in the top 50 in KenPom?

I'm not buying the Canes, and teams that have the size to contain Reneau can expose Miami's porous half-court offense.

My Pick: Ole Miss -4.5 (Play to -5)
