Oakland vs Purdue College Basketball Betting Preview

Oakland Basketball

On the surface, seven new additions to the Golden Grizzlies program should be a reason for optimism. However, Oakland fans might need to exercise a bit of patience, given all the interchanging parts.

Junior college transfers Khoi Thurmon and Isaac Garrett headline a group of newcomers that also includes Jayson Woodrich, Jaylen Jones, Brody Robinson, Michael Houge and William Kassi.

Head coach Greg Kampe signaled that the heavy influx of transfers was more of a response to the modern era of college basketball. Unfortunately, quantity doesn't necessarily reflect an increase in quality.

Oakland faced a difficult test in its season opener as a 24.5-point underdog against the Michigan Wolverines and lost convincingly by a 43-point margin.

The majority of Oakland's additions were in the frontcourt, as Kampe highlighted rebounding as an area his team could improve in. However, Oakland managed only 22 rebounds, compared to Michigan's 40.

Rebounding is particularly key to the way teams shoot from the perimeter in today's game. The Wolverines attempted 35 3-pointers, while sinking 19 for 54.3%.

Oakland's next opponent will be a Purdue team that finished 16th in 3-point percentage last season at 38.2%.

Given the constant revolving door that is the transfer portal, Purdue did well to hold on to key players like Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer.

The Boilermakers added transfers Oscar Cluff and Liam Murphy, along with guard Omer Mayer from Israel, who comes with plenty of experience after playing last season with Maccabi Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague.

Antione West Jr. joins Mayer as another talented player in a freshman class that slots in behind sophomores C.J. Cox and Gicarri Harris. The 7-foot-4 center Daniel Jacobsen offers a striking similarity to Purdue's former player Zach Edey, who led the Boilermakers to the national title game two years ago.

Considering that head coach Matt Painter has a team that ranks 10th in returning minutes (66.9%) according to Bart Torvik, you can understand why the Boilermakers were highly touted to begin the season as the top-ranked team.

Although Purdue looked impressive in its season-opening 82-51 victory over Evansville, it fell just short of covering the 33-point spread.

It's worth noting that Evansville got the cover mainly because it matched Purdue on the glass, with both teams finishing with 40 rebounds.

Since Oakland is unlikely to be as fortunate, the Boilermakers have a decent chance to come away with a lopsided result.

Oakland vs. Purdue Betting Analysis

It's difficult to envision a competitive path for Oakland in this matchup if it can't contain Purdue on the glass. These teams last met in 2020, when Purdue won convincingly, 93-50.

This season, bettors have found success backing favorites in this price range, as they're 9-6 against the spread when laying 30 or more points.

Moreover, if we query our database historically to date, we'll find that Big Ten teams are also 51-33 against the spread in this spot.

Therefore, I could only look to lay it with the favorite, as a 30.5-point spread should undoubtedly flatter the Boilermakers at home on Friday night.

My Pick: Purdue -30.5
