Saint Joe's vs New Mexico College Basketball Betting Preview
Saint Joe's needed to win its conference to make the Big Dance, but it did finish the season strong. Including the Atlantic 10 Tournament and the first two games of the NIT, the Hawks have won 16 of their last 21 games.
While their opponents (the Lobos) are balanced, the Hawks are fiercely defensive-minded. They rank 56th in defensive efficiency and 32nd in defensive effective field goal percentage. In their 16 wins during this stretch, they've held opponents to less than 67 points 11 times.
The Hawks will certainly have a few questions heading into next season, but their star sophomore Jaiden Glover-Toscano just put up 24 points against Cal in a nail-biter.
Where the Hawks may struggle the most is on the interior, as their top four scoring threats are guards.
The Lobos' top four scorers average at least 10.8 points per game, but their issue has been their depth.
From a metrics standpoint, New Mexico has the advantage. It plays fast, ranking 38th-fastest in average shot clock used before a shot attempt. Teams that tend to play at tempo might struggle with ball security, but that's not the case for New Mexico.
The Lobos are top-61 in both limiting offensive turnovers and creating them.
Their big flaw is experience, ranking outside the top 300 in terms of Division I experience.
The home court should also play a factor, as The Pit tends to have an impact on the opponents.
However, this line is double digits, and it’s going to be hard to confidently lay it with the Lobos. While they’ll be on their home court, I’m not sure how amped up their crowd will be.
Plus, Saint Joseph’s has lost eight times since December 11, and only twice has it been by more than 10 points.
Glover-Toscano has a big game, and the volume of 3s that the Hawks put up per game will be a factor here. They'll get hot from 3 and keep this game within a margin.
My Pick: Saint Joseph’s +10.5 (Play to +9.5)
