Towson vs Monmouth College Basketball Betting Preview
Towson Basketball
Towson is in the midst of an up-and-down season, as the Tigers sit at 6-7 in the CAA and are running out of time to make a move up the league standings.
The preseason favorite followed up an embarrassing road defeat against North Carolina A&T with a home loss against UNC Wilmington, and the Tigers have have alternated wins and losses ever since.
This season has been one filled with injuries and disappointment for the Tigers.
The offense runs through Tyler Tejada, who averages 17.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Dylan Williamson averages 14.2 points and Jack Doumbia Jr. drops 10.5 points per game off the bench.
Towson will play 10 guys at least 10 minutes per contest.
Mor Seck is a player who should've been further along in his development, as he's being under-utilized since coming over from Fresno State.
I'll be interested in seeing how Towson uses its big men against Monmouth to help elevate its rebounding advantage.
The defense has been a calling card for Towson over the years, and this unit ranks third in the CAA in overall defensive efficiency. Towson provides really good on-ball pressure on the wing and is an excellent rebounding team that does well to limit second-chance opportunities.
We've seen many teams in the CAA attack Towson off the drive, and I'll be interested in seeing how Monmouth procures paint touches in this matchup.
Monmouth Basketball
Monmouth has also found itself battling through injuries this season. King Rice always has teams that play with high energy and effort, and this season is no different for the Hawks, who are just a couple of breaks away from being able to make some noise down the stretch.
The offense is coming into form, and Monmouth should be fun to watch the rest of the way.
The offense has received a huge boost from Kavion McClain, who's averaging 17 points per game in his two contests this season. McClain hadn't played all season prior to February 5, but the offense has been much more potent with him in the lineup.
Jason Rivera-Torres averages 16 points per contest and three others average 10.
Monmouth has made 19 triples combined in the last two contests and has ramped up the pace a bit, as well. I would look for this to continue in this matchup.
The defense has been such a mixed bag this season, though. One game could feature giving up 80 points to NC A&T, and the next could result in a strong defensive effort — similar to the first contest against Towson.
In that first matchup, Towson scored just 48 points and did a poor job of getting to the foul line — in addition to shooting a chilling 7-of-31 from deep.
Towson vs. Monmouth Betting Analysis
Monmouth is listed as a one-point favorite in this contest with a total set at 135.5, a clear adjustment over projections based on the potency of the Hawks' offense with McClain in the lineup.
I'm going to play Monmouth on the moneyline.
As I mentioned, Monmouth has received a massive boost offensively since McClain has been inserted into the fold. The Hawks are averaging 1.18 points per possession in the two-game sample with McClain playing, and his presence has elevated everyone on the floor with him.
The Hawks just shredded Drexel while scoring 93 points, and I would guess we continue to see aggressive offense in this game.
Rivera-Torres scored 21 points with mediocre shooting in the first meeting, and he did well to get open looks. I think he could shine in this matchup once again.
Andrew Ball is logging solid minutes at the four-spot, and if he gets hot, this offense is going to be a problem.
The Hawks' defense has been inconsistent, but it did play its best basketball of the season against Towson in the first meeting. Every shot was contested and Monmouth did an excellent job of defending without fouling and forcing the ball out of Tejada’s hands.
That has to be the game plan in this matchup, forcing other Tigers to beat you shooting from deep.
Monmouth has gotten better since the first matchup and it's a much more dangerous team than its conference record suggests.
I think we see a higher scoring affair and Monmouth makes the plays necessary to win this game late at home.
My Pick: Monmouth ML -122 (Play to -125)
