Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview: Beating Those They Should Beat

Coming off a 39-0 rout at the hands of USC, it looked like Fresno State was inbound for a terrible season. Jayden Mandal looked lost, completing 7-of-16 passes for 77 yards with an interception. But turns out, that was just the result of a lopsided matchup.

Since that Week 1 game, Mandal has been quite efficient, throwing eight touchdowns to no interceptions, and he went four straight games without being sacked (a streak that ended with two last week against Boise State).

Fresno built a 4-2 record with multiple exceedingly winnable games left on the slate.

Although, something must be said about quality of opponent in those wins – not one of its four wins came over opponents power-rated better than 100th in the country, and three of them have one win apiece – but last week’s game against Boise State gives us a solid data point.

Boise kept a comfortable distance throughout the game, out-gained Fresno by 170 yards, and finished with a 274-69 rushing advantage. However, Mandal and change-of-pace QB Khristian Martin both looked capable, breaking a few explosive plays open throughout the game.

RB Rayshon Luke remains questionable for this game after sitting out the Boise contest.

Against better offenses, Fresno’s defense won’t be able to keep pace, especially up front. But against pedestrian offenses (of which it’ll see a few, including this week), the defense suits just fine.

San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview: Bad Team, Horrendous Performance

On the surface, San Diego State is a disappointing, but not world-ending, 2-4. But dive just a hair into this schedule and … oof. This is a bad football team.

San Diego State’s 31-29 win over Texas State was the fourth least likely victory on the season (per SP+ Postgame Win Expectancy) thanks to two non-offensive touchdowns. Its other four FBS games were all non-competitive losses that have been growing in severity.

With no bye week until November, this team can’t catch its breath and regroup, nor make informed coordinator changes without immediate dire consequences (see: Colorado State).

The Aztecs are stuck in a slide without an obvious way out.

San Diego State’s offense is truly broken in Sean Lewis’ “Flash Fast” system. Despite running a top-10 pace in the country, the Aztecs’ down-to-down efficiency is just horrendous – their 34.3% Success Rate is seventh-worst in the country.

The product is one of the most difficult offenses to watch (San Diego State drives end with a punt with the sixth-most frequency in the country).

The defense isn’t much better. Though individually the players are fine, the unit is exhausted from being on the field the entire game. No defense is on the field more this season than San Diego State (opponents possess the ball for 60.5% of plays this season) and it shows.

DC Demetrius Sumler is forced to play the whole two deep – 19 defenders have 150+ snaps already – and the talent just isn’t there to be successful.

San Diego State ranks 110th in points per drive allowed and 119th in Success Rate, but 46th in EPA Per Play allowed. That’s fatigue. Not just in a game-to-game sense, but week-by-week attrition as players wear down due to prolonged time on the field.

Fresno State vs San Diego State Pick, Betting Analysis

Temperatures in San Diego have been, and will remain, unseasonably hot. A heat advisory is in effect for the area throughout the day Saturday, meaning the first half at Snapdragon Stadium will be warm.

That unevenly impacts the home Aztecs, compared to Fresno State, who plays in one of the hottest areas of the country.

This San Diego State offense hasn’t scored more than 17 points against an FBS opponent yet this season, and Fresno’s top-40 unit (points per drive) is one to force havoc plays, standing inside the top 15 in takeaways and top 50 in sack rate.

It’s proven more than capable of shutting down bad opposing offenses (three to Sacramento State, 10 to San Jose State, and six to Washington State) – San Diego State’s offense should be considered in line with those poor units.

Where Fresno is susceptible (against the run), San Diego State can’t hurt them; the Aztecs are 124th in Rushing Success Rate this season.

It’s not a pretty team total, but San Diego State is a current Team Total Under system play as it stands today.

Pick: San Diego State Team Total Under 19.5 (Play to 17.5)
