Houston Christian Huskies Betting Preview: Defense Can Compete For Short Time

Houston Christian comes into this one off a tough road loss last week against Eastern Kentucky. The Huskies were hampered by four turnovers and really struggled to move the football on the ground.

Fumbles really set up Eastern Kentucky for scoring drives, but the Huskies played pretty well defensively in holding the Colonels to just one score in the final three quarters.

Houston Christian was stout defensively, holding Eastern Kentucky to just 2.4 yards per rush, with the longest play given up all game being only 14 yards.

Houston Christian will be overmatched in this game against Nebraska, but I can certainly appreciate how its defense is playing, and this group should compete well here for a half.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Betting Preview: Raiola Looking Sharp

Nebraska comes in off a dominating 68-0 victory over Akron last week. The Huskers led the game 33-0 at half, and the big story was the halftime speech delivered by head coach Matt Rhule.

He talked about not giving up, and Nebraska was exceedingly motivated to have the young guys in there executing at a high level, thus we saw no let up from it for 60 minutes.

Offensively, the execution was nearly flawless, as the Big Red accrued 728 total yards while averaging 7.1 yards per carry on the ground.

Dylan Raiola looked sharp, throwing for 364 yards and four touchdowns before giving way to the backups in the later stages of the third quarter.

I would expect high intensity from Nebraska in this game — without necessarily wanting to run up the score for four quarters in this one.

Situationally, the Huskers have Michigan on deck, and I would expect the reserves to play most of the second half in this one.

Houston Christian vs Nebraska Pick, Betting Analysis

I would look to the under in this game.

Nebraska should control this game throughout, and I would expect that the Huskers score on nearly every offensive possession of the first half.

However, we could see some longer drives that bleed the clock. I expect Nebraska to keep the ball on the ground a ton or execute short passing plays, as we're going to get significant wind in Lincoln on Saturday.

The current forecast calls for 13-18 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 35 mph. These forecasts for Nebraska are fairly reliable for this time of the year, so it's something to put some stock into.

Houston Christian won't be able to run the ball, and the wind will affect its passing game, which is already middling at the FCS level. I would expect very little threat for Houston Christian to score in this game, and it should struggle badly to move the football with any regularity.

Nebraska was fired up about something that Akron said or did in the first half, which added fuel to the fire for the second half onslaught. But I don’t see Nebraska performing such a blatant “run up” of the score in this game.

These two coaching staffs have “off the field” relationships and have partnered together running summer camps. There's a general mutual respect between the two staffs.

I can completely see domination by Nebraska, and the threat of Houston Christian scoring is very minimal.

But in the second half of this one, with the game out of hand, I would look for Nebraska to play conservative and run the ball, bleed the clock and get out of this one healthy and without incident.

Pick: Under 54.5
