Jacksonville State Gamecocks Betting Preview: Let Cam Cook

The Gamecocks come into this matchup riding high off a thrashing of Murray State. Their dominance on the ground was on full display, as running back Cam Cook racked up 147 yards and two touchdowns.

However, they're in for a big step up in competition this week as they go on the road to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Jacksonville State's game plan is clear; they're going to feed Cook often.

The Gamecocks run the ball at the seventh-highest rate in the country, and Cook has made their attack efficient, as he's averaging six yards per carry. However, he and the other ballcarriers are in for a long day, as the Golden Eagles specialize in stopping the run.

Southern Miss ranks 30th in yards per rush allowed, holding its opposition to just 3.3 yards per carry thus far.

It's strength against strength on this side of the ball, and the Golden Eagles are the best rush defense the Gamecocks will have seen.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Betting Preview: Enjoying Pin-Point Passing

On the other side, the Golden Eagles' offense is a stark contrast. Southern Miss has thrown the ball at the 30th-highest rate in the country and is set to have success against the Jacksonville State secondary.

Quarterback Braylon Braxton does it all for this Golden Eagles offense, as he leads the team in rushing attempts while remaining proficient through the air. The Gamecocks will have a lot to worry about, as they rank 126th in yards per pass allowed and 97th in opponent completion percentage.

Braxton isn't afraid to stretch the field, and early success could open up rushing lanes for him and their trio of running backs.

Look for the Golden Eagles to test the Gamecocks' secondary early and often in this one.

Jacksonville State vs Southern Miss Pick, Betting Analysis

Southern Miss is the side to back, as this spread has been bet up through a key number. The market is supporting the Golden Eagles and rightfully so, as they have the tools to shut down the Jacksonville State rushing attack.

With their defense setting the tone, we should see the Golden Eagles create explosive plays through the air and not relinquish the lead once they grab it.

Take the Golden Eagles to cover.

Pick: Southern Miss -4
