Missouri Tigers Betting Preview: Ready for a Fight

Missouri has been a model of consistency the last handful of seasons under head coach Eli Drinkwitz.

The Tigers haven't made the massive splash or benefited from any playoff appearances, but this is a program that has gone toe-to-toe with just about anybody not named Georgia or Alabama in the SEC.

Expectations were high once again in Columbia, and I would say the 2025 team has largely lived up to the hype.

It just happened to be on the wrong side of a couple of close battles with Alabama and Vanderbilt. Had Mizzou won either of those, it would still be alive in the playoff race.

The third loss was at home to undefeated Texas A&M, and it came immediately after Penn State transfer quarterback Beau Pribula exited with an injury.

True freshman backup Matt Zollers understandably struggled a bit in his first-ever start, but he looked a little bit better last week in a win over Mississippi State, where he tossed two touchdowns.

Zollers will be put to the test this week in a hostile environment against an elite Sooner defense.

What will help is that he shares the backfield with Ahmad Hardy.

The ULM transfer is an absolute beast and has nearly eclipsed 1,500 yards on the ground with two games still remaining, also adding 15 touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, just as the Oklahoma defense can cause some problems for Missouri, the Tigers' defense can absolutely make life difficult for the Sooners.

This is one of the more underrated units in the country, and a team that tackles very well.

Forcing a couple of turnovers would go a long way toward helping Mizzou take the crowd out of this one and grab an early lead.

Oklahoma Sooners Betting Preview: Built on Defense

It was a little bit of a make-or-break year for Brent Venables in Norman, and he has stood up to the challenge.

Venables has long been one of the elite defensive play-callers in America, and this year has been no different on that front.

The Sooners rank in the top five nationally in almost every defensive metric and have been stifling offenses all season.

Just last week against Alabama, Oklahoma left quarterback Ty Simpson looking totally lost at times. This was the same quarterback who was firmly in the Heisman conversation before that game.

What has allowed Oklahoma to take the next step under Venables this season has been an improved offensive attack..

That starts with Washington State transfer quarterback John Mateer.

Mateer is a bit of a throwback-style quarterback, willing to use his legs and absorb contact to get key first downs, while also having the ability to elude pressure and find an open man down the field with his arm. Beyond that, he's a gritty leader who has imposed a level of toughness on this offense that was missing.

He’s definitely still not the most accurate passer in the world, but he's a guy who has come through when his team has needed him.

Mateer has struggled a bit when he's faced some of the elite defenses in the conference, so Saturday will be a real test for him and this offense.

Finding some balance with the running game will be very important.

Missouri vs Oklahoma Pick, Betting Analysis

Missouri has quietly flown under the radar in the SEC all season, despite being a very solid football team.

I expect Coach Drinkwitz to have his team ready to go from the start in this one and really play into the narrative that everyone is crowning Oklahoma as a College Football Playoff team.

For as good as Oklahoma has been on the defensive side of the ball, the offense has relied on turnovers and Tate Sandell's leg to do most of its scoring in the big road wins over Tennessee and Alabama.

The Tiger defense should cause plenty of problems for John Mateer and company, allowing it to hang around in this one.

I actually give Mizzou a decent chance of pulling off the outright upset on the road, but I'll play it safe and take the points in what should be a fun one in Norman.

Pick: Missouri +7 or Better
