2024 Tennessee Volunteers Football

The Tennessee Volunteers football team is gearing up for the 2024 season with high expectations following a successful 9-4 campaign in 2023. Under the guidance of head coach Josh Heupel, the team aims to build on their achievements and continue to make strides in the competitive landscape of college football. Heupel has accumulated 27 wins over his first three seasons - this is the most wins in a three-year span in Knoxville since Phillip Fulmer won 28 games between 2002 and 2004.

Although it may seem like a rebuilding year on the surface, Tennessee may have the firepower to potentially contend for a College Football Playoff spot in the expanded format. On the offensive side, the Volunteers will transition from Joe Milton, a day three draft selection, to Nico Iamaleava under center. Iamaleava was one of the top recruits in the Class of 2023 - he served as Milton's backup until the Citrus Bowl, where he recorded four total touchdowns en route to 35-0 win over Iowa. Iamaleava will complemented by a plethora of weapons, including Squirrel White, Bru McCoy, and transfer portal acquisition, Chris Brazzell II from Tulane.

On the other side of the ball, the Vols defense was a surprising strength in 2023. In 2022, Tennessee had a historic season on offense, lighting it up with Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt with an all-out aerial attack. Although the 2023 offense wasn't a weakness, it was the defense that kept Tennessee in a lot of games. A big reason for that was edge rusher James Pearce Jr. The 6'5" pass rusher had a remarkable 9.5 sacks last season and is an early contender to be the top overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Pearce Jr. will be leaned on heavily as the Volunteers have 5 new starters slated to start in the secondary.

Despite the roster turnover, Tennessee has appealing National Title consensus odds at +3500, which is tied for 12th shortest odds in the country. Additionally, the Vols are carrying +170 odds to make the expanded 12-team playoff under head coach Josh Heupel. Despite this, the bookmakers don't have as much optimism for the Vols to win the loaded SEC as they carry +1400 odds to win the conference.

Tennessee Volunteers Point Spreads

"Covering the spread" is a reference to a spread bet, which is a bet on how much a team will win the game by.

Here’s how a Volunteers spread might look:

  • Tennessee +9.5 (-110)
  • Alabama -9.5 ( -110)

If the Volunteers lose 34-20, they’re losers ATS, since they need to win or lose by at least 9 points or less to cash spread tickets. Alabama, on the other hand, can cover with a win of ten or more points.

Tennessee Volunteers Over/Unders

Betting on the Vols' overs were breakeven. They finished 6-6-1 on over/unders — bets on the total amount of points scored in a game — so no matter which side you took, you came out roughly even.

Oddsmakers set the total at how many points they think will be scored, so it could be 47 for a game against Alabama, for example. If you took the over, a 34-20 final means your bet pays off no matter who wins the game. If you bet under, you’d need there to be at 47 points or fewer scored between the two teams. Ties on the bet are possible, and they result in refunds.

Tennessee Volunteers Moneylines

Moneyline odds take into account how likely a team is to win the game and adjust payouts accordingly, a winning record doesn’t always mean a profit.

Tennessee defeating Missouri as a -300 favorite is fine, but a $30 bet pays out just $10. If you’re able to catch the Volunteers as a +300 underdog, though, a $10 bet on them profits $30. These bets are simplest to understand with $10 or $100 as a unit, but the math is the same regardless.

Tennessee Volunteers Props

Player props are bets on the stats put up by a player for a single game. You could bet on players' rushing or passing stats.

Tennessee Volunteers Futures

While they’re flying a little under the radar thanks to sharing the SEC with Alabama, Georgia, and now former Big 12 powerhouses like Texas and Oklahoma. If you think they’re going to win the conference, you can put your money down on a futures bet.

Futures are wa gers that settle at the end of the season, and besides odds to win the conference, popular futures bets include players' odds to win certain end-of-season awards or over/unders on team wins throughout the year.
