Northern Illinois Huskies Betting Preview: Struggles in DeKalb
Northern Illinois enters Tucson still searching for its first victory. The Huskies opened the season with a 40-0 loss at Iowa before falling, 28-24, to Illinois State last week.
Sitting at 0-2, NIU now goes back up to Power 4 competition, playing an irritated opponent in front of its home crowd.
The biggest problem has been the offense.
The Huskies ranked near the bottom of FBS in most offensive categories in 2025, and those struggles have carried over into 2026.
Through two games, Northern Illinois ranks 131st nationally in Success Rate, 131st in Passing Success Rate and 138th in Points Per Opportunity.
It's been flat-out difficult for the Huskies to sustain drives and convert scoring opportunities when they do get on the move.
To the their credit, the defense has been more competitive. Northern Illinois ranks 43rd nationally in Points Per Opportunity allowed and has done a respectable job limiting explosive plays in certain situations.
The problem is that the defense has spent far too much time on the field because the offense has failed to sustain drives. That's rarely a recipe for success against a team with Arizona's talent level.
My hunch is that this unit will once again have to defend for far too long and get worn out by Noah Fifita and company.
Arizona Wildcats Betting Preview: Fifita Leads the Way
Last week's trip to Provo left a sour taste in Arizona's mouth. The Wildcats opened the season with a 35-7 win over Northern Arizona before the hard-fought 28-17 loss at BYU.
While the loss was disappointing, there's no shame in coming up short against a top-15 BYU squad in one of the conference's toughest road environments.
Quarterback Noah Fifita remains the centerpiece of the program.
In a world where most veteran players turn to the transfer portal, Fifita has stayed loyal to the Wildcats and gives Arizona a major advantage at the most important position on the field.
The Wildcats have shown they can move the football efficiently through two games, ranking 28th nationally in Offensive Success Rate and 18th in Havoc allowed.
They've also been pretty efficient on the ground, ranking 17th in Rushing Success Rate.
I don't expect these numbers to dip as the year goes on, as Zona had efficient offensive numbers a year ago and returned Fifita and plenty of other key pieces.
Defensively, Arizona has been solid through the first two weeks. It's led by linebacker Taye Brown, who leads the team with 15 tackles, and linebacker Chase Kennedy, who has already recorded 2.5 sacks.
Safety Quinn Olson has also made an impact on the back end with an interception, and Arizona's overall athleticism should present problems for a Northern Illinois offense that ranks near the bottom of FBS in several key efficiency metrics.
Northern Illinois vs Arizona Pick, Betting Analysis
Laying more than four touchdowns is always uncomfortable, but I think this is a spot where Arizona can create significant separation.
The Wildcats enter this game off a frustrating loss at BYU and should be highly motivated to put together a complete performance.
More importantly, Arizona owns substantial matchup advantages across the board and has far more speed.
The Wildcat offense should be able to move the ball through the air and on the ground without the Huskies putting up much resistance.
On the other side of the ball, NIU just doesn’t have the horses to do much this year. Look for the Wildcats to stuff the run and force Northern Illinois into difficult third-and-long situations.
Give me Arizona to play with purpose after last week's loss and take care of business in convincing fashion.
