Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview
A quick glance at Arizona State's 1-1 record with a 28-point loss to Texas A&M (but 70-7 win over FCS Morgan State) might have someone thinking that ASU can't compete with the better teams. But that 48-20 final in College Station was among the most misleading final scores of Week 2.
Arizona State took a 24-20 deficit into the fourth quarter, but gave up a long punt return that turned into a short-field score for A&M. Then QB Cutter Boley threw two pick-sixes (the second being an ill-advised flash screen) and that moved the game from competitive to garbage time.
In reality, Arizona State did a nice job, especially on defense. It held A&M to just 58% of its total available yards, less than 4.5 yards per play, and a 41% Success Rate.
Marcel Reed was forced to throw more than Mike Elko probably would have liked as the ground game wasn't there — A&M mustered just 2.7 yards per carry and leading rusher Rueben Owens III finished with 10 carries and 34 yards.
Sure, these are coordinator growing pains, but Arizona State laid out a blueprint (taken a bit from Texas last year) on how to apply the brakes to Reed & Co.
Before the unraveling, Boley was playing well. It helps to have an emerging receiver like Reed Harris, who exploded for 189 yards and two touchdowns, neither by accident.
Harris appears to be a legitimate high-end NFL-caliber receiver who's explosive in a number of routes and averages 21.7yards on 15 receptions. The senior stands 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds — if you haven't committed his name to memory, now is the time to do so.
Having the best player on the field at all times is a significant advantage in college football and Harris appears to be that player for a majority of Arizona State's remaining games.
Kansas Jayhawks Betting Preview
Isaiah Marshall was a surprise QB pick for many, but by now just about everyone knows his name — and it might be for the wrong reason.
While fans and brands pretended to be amazed by this play, this is unacceptable from a Division I quarterback and violates just about every cardinal rule the position carries. Surely Monday's film session wasn't filled with praise after this one.
Kansas hung with Missouri in Week 2 for a bit, even pulling its expected win rate above 50%, but the Tigers won out with superior talent and good adjustments.
To summarize that game, Kansas fields enough danger to put itself in a position to win sporadically, but doesn't have the depth or line play to really keep up with good teams. Snuff out the early push from Marshall and his gunslinging tendencies, and that's about it.
Missouri created 17 havoc plays (12 on passing plays!) and pressured Marshall 20 times for four sacks. Kansas posted a 27% Success Rate and, removing its seven explosive plays, a mind-boggling -37.7 total EPA.
Although the game was close late and although Kansas suffered a 38-20 defeat, this was a resounding failure offensively. The Jayhawks appear to be the ultimate boom-or-bust offense in college football.
That means we'll have some really fun highs and some disastrous lows. Great for television, poor for betting on.
Arizona State vs Kansas Pick, Betting Analysis
College football is going international. After a handful of years with the Dublin Week 0 game, the Big 12 Conference struck a deal to play this game in London at Wembley Stadium — the same venue the NFL uses.
The NFL has played 27 games in London, 15 of which went under the posted point total (55.6%). In overseas games of late, underdogs covered 5-of-7 in Ireland for college football.
The total opened at 56.5 points on Sunday and was bet down both swiftly and repeatedly to 50.5, where it sits now. A full touchdown move on the total means there is no value left betting this number, especially as it moved under the key figure of 51.
Both teams appeared to learn from the gaffe that was the Los Angeles Rams' 36-hour Australian excursion that featured a 27-7 butt-kicking.
Arizona State flew straight from Dallas to London on Saturday while Kansas arrived in London on Tuesday. No weird body block science that took 15 staffers two years to absolutely fumble.
Arizona State is the better football team here. Its defense performed significantly better than the final indicates as A&M scored just 14 points on fields longer than 50 yards and 21 points on a combined 8 yards of total offense.
A&M is superior talent-wise than Kansas on offense and I expect Arizona State matches up well with the run game Andy Kotelnicki wants to run. Throw in the absolute insanity that is Marshall at QB and I believe Arizona State could put this game away quickly.
Kansas does not have a player on its roster capable of matching up with Harris out wide. The run game is still a strength with an offensive line that created 3.24 yards per carry against an A&M line packed with blue-chip and NFL prospects. There is a much wider delta here than the odds suggest.
