Utah Utes Betting Preview: Need to Overcome Injuries

The Utes were bullied by Texas Tech last weekend, and now they have a tricky spot heading across the country to take on West Virginia. It's a tough emotional letdown spot for the Utes, given how much energy they poured into last week's game.

Considering it's a potential sleepy spot, the Utes can come out flat here. They were also banged up a lot in last week's game, notably on the defensive side of the ball.

The Utes will be missing pieces in their secondary and defensive line. Luckily, they're taking on a West Virginia offense that looked dreadful last week against Kansas.

It's also a tough matchup for the Utah offense since the West Virginia defense has been better than expected.

Quarterback Devon Dampier wasn't at his best last week and will have to improve through the air. I expect him to use his legs a lot more since the ground game is the one area where you can exploit the West Virginia defense.

Offensively, the Utes should come out flat, but their ground game should get going as the matchup progresses. Their offense should be slow and methodical, and they'll try to grind away the clock to keep the up-tempo Neers' offense off the field.

Despite the injuries on defense, it's a nice bounce-back spot for the unit. The 'Neers' offense loves to go fast, but they've been a terrible, injury-riddled unit overall.

The defensive line will have to step up with some key pieces missing, but they've done an excellent job creating havoc. Their secondary is the one area of concern here, especially with players out.

If the Utes can limit the explosive plays through the air, I expect them to grind out a win here, but I don't expect it to be pretty.

West Virginia Mountaineers Betting Preview: Top Defense

The 'Neers were destined to get destroyed last week, and who could blame them after they pulled off an emotional victory in the Backyard Brawl the week prior? The previous week's total yardage was much closer than the final score indicated, but they were dominated from the opening kickoff.

It's a difficult matchup for the 'Neers, especially considering how bad the offense has been. The 'Neers love to go up-tempo, but that approach is flawed if your offense isn't going anywhere. We could see a lot of quick, unproductive possessions here, especially in the early going.

I realize their offense has been dealing with many injuries thus far, but it'll be tough for them to generate consistent scoring throughout the contest.

Minus some mediocre rush explosiveness, there's nothing to be excited about for the West Virginia offense, even with Utah missing some key defensive pieces.

If the 'Neers have any chance of winning the game or keeping it close, it'll be due to their defense. I know last week's performance wasn't the best, but the Kansas offense is a tough team to scheme against.

The defense has impressed me, and they're hands down the team's anchor. As mentioned above, they rank inside the top 30 in many defensive metrics, including EPA/Pass and Average Late Down Distance.

West Virginia does an excellent job of putting its opponents into difficult third-down situations, which correlates to a much higher success rate. They'll also benefit from Utah's emotional game against Texas Tech, as well as the fact that it's a cross-country trip.

I didn't love what I saw from the Utah offense over the last couple of weeks, and they may come out flat again. If West Virginia can generate some early turnovers, it could put the Utes on upset alert.

Utah vs West Virginia Pick, Betting Analysis

This is an excellent spot to take a first-half under. I expect the Utes to come out flat given the situational and travel spot, and I don't like what I've seen from their offense lately.

It's also a tougher matchup than many deem, as the West Virginia defense has been strong metrically early in the season.

West Virginia's offense is also a complete disaster, and I believe they'll struggle even against a short-handed Utah defense.

I also like the full-game under, but I would much rather take the first-half approach since Utah could get its footing in the second half and start putting points on the board.

This is a smash first-half under play all the way.

Pick: 1H Under 23.5
