Vanderbilt vs Virginia Tech Preview

Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview: Can History Repeat Itself?
It was a historic season for Clark Lea and Vanderbilt a year ago, which has led to big expectations for the 2025 season.
The Commodores defeated Alabama at home, won at Auburn, and beatGeorgia Tech in its bowl game.
Now, after receiving a waiver, star quarterback Diego Pavia is back for one final season, and the 'Dores have their eyes set on even bigger things.
A win over Virginia Tech last season helped kickstart much of Vanderbilt's momentum, and now the Commodores have to head to Blacksburg in a revenge spot for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech lost to South Carolina in Atlanta last week, but it was a more competitive game than the final scoreline suggests.
The Hokies are stout on defense, and quarterback Kyron Drones can make plays with his legs.
In addition to Pavia, Vandy also returns its top running back (Sedrick Alexander) and stud tight end (Eli Stowers). There were some losses on the offensive line, but Clark Lea brought in a nice haul of big fellas via the transfer portal.
Vanderbilt has the pieces to be a top 20 offense nationally in 2025. The unit looked strong last week, albeit against Charleston Southern, in a blowout 45-3 victory in the opener.
On the other side of the ball, Vanderbilt should be good again. Clark Lea is one of the best defensive minds in the business, and the 'Dores bring in some significant transfers in guys like Keanu Koht and Zaylin Wood.
There are a few questions at safety, but the cornerback room is very strong, and the pass defense in general should be a strength.
Keeping Kyron Drones from using his legs will be paramount in this matchup, as will creating some negative plays in the backfield to get the Hokies out of sync.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview: Protect the Football
Virginia Tech could not get over the hump in close games last season, and it was more of the same in the opener against South Carolina.
The Hokies actually outgained the Gamecocks, but Kyron Drones threw two picks, and the Hokies could not get the ball in the end zone when they had their chances.
This feels like a must-win bounce-back spot for Tech, to avoid a 0-2 start before ACC play begins.
The positive from last week? The defense played very well against a potent South Carolina offense.
Virginia Tech did allow a late 64-yard touchdown pass, but that was when it was in desperation mode and needed to be aggressive. The defense forced a safety and made life difficult for LaNorris Sellers and the rest of the Gamecock backfield.
Another difficult challenge awaits this week, but the Hokies will be inside the friendly confines of Lane Stadium.
It should be an awesome atmosphere, which will help Tech in its efforts to contain Pavia and the unconventional Commodore offense.
Plain and simple, for Tech to win, Drones must take much better care of the football and be more accurate when he does have an open man.
I like the Hokies' chances if they can win the turnover battle.

Vanderbilt vs Virginia Tech Pick, Betting Analysis
I've got a lot of respect for the defensive coaching staffs of both teams in this game and think points will be hard to come by as a result.
The Hokies held a dynamic quarterback in Sellers in check for most of last week's matchup against South Carolina, so they should be well prepared to contain the dual-threat nature of Diego Pavia.
Additionally, Vandy will likely have longer, more methodical drives that will chew up plenty of clock.
I also think you'll see each offense struggle to score touchdowns in the red zone, leading to numerous field goal attempts.
I expect a hard-nosed competitive battle throughout, that very well could come down to a play or two late in the 4th quarter.
While I don't have a strong lean either way on the side, I do like the Under at 47.5, which I'd play all the way down to 46.
Pick: Under 47.5 (-110, BetMGM | Play to 46)
