The Braves have more uncertainty after Chris Sale starts Game 1. Grant Holmes and Tyler Mahle are the likely Game 2 options, and Mahle has been excellent since joining Atlanta with a 1.99 ERA across nine starts.
Philadelphia's larger concern is a bullpen carrying a 5.79 ERA since Sept. 1. The bet on the Phillies is therefore also a bet on Sánchez working deep enough to minimize those late-inning questions.

Pick: Astros to win Game 2
Houston turns to Hunter Brown after using a bullpen game in the opener. Brown finished 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA and posted a 2.33 ERA across his final seven starts.
Chicago's lineup has moved in the opposite direction. Munetaka Murakami hit .154 after Aug. 1, while Colson Montgomery hit .158 over the same stretch. Houston also won five of seven meetings during the regular season.
Yordan Alvarez adds another reason to prefer the Astros after hitting .400 with four home runs across his final 11 games. Brown against a slumping Chicago offense is one of the cleaner Game 2 matchups on the MLB board.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Game 2: Best MLB Bets Today
Pick: Under on the game total
Sonny Gray against Max Fried gives us the best starting-pitcher matchup of Wednesday's Wild Card slate.
Gray led the majors with 18 wins and finished with a 2.72 ERA across 169 innings. Fried missed time with two injured-list stints but posted a 2.73 ERA after returning on Aug. 29.
Both clubs also finished among the top three in team ERA, so the pitching advantage does not disappear once the starters leave. Boston's 94 road wRC+ adds to the case for a lower-scoring game.

Chicago has the stronger offensive résumé. The Cubs led MLB in runs, posted a .765 OPS and hit 218 home runs while winning five of six regular-season meetings with San Diego.
Game 2 tilts toward the Padres on the mound. Kevin Gausman finished with a 4.51 ERA for Chicago, while Nick Pivetta posted a 2.86 ERA for San Diego.
The bigger separator comes after Pivetta. San Diego's bullpen led baseball with 8.9 WAR and has Mason Miller available to finish close games. Fernando Tatis Jr. also enters October after posting a 172 wRC+ in the second half.
If Pivetta gets through five or six innings with a lead, San Diego has the relief depth to protect it.
