College Football Week 5: Penn State vs. Northwestern Preview

Penn State enters on the back of a tough outing against Wisconsin, where a 17-7 halftime lead slipped away after the offense managed only a field goal in the second half. Quarterback Rocco Becht posted just a 23% Success Rate on 31 attempts without top receiver Koby Howard, who remains out.

The defense still travels well. Coordinator D'Anton Lynn's unit grades out as the top pass-coverage group in FBS, per PFF, though the Nittany Lions have given up five rushing gains of 50-plus yards this season.

Northwestern comes off a cover against Indiana behind quarterback Aidan Chiles, who completed 22 of 29 passes for two touchdowns in Chip Kelly's system. The Wildcats converted half their third- and fourth-down tries against the Hoosiers.

The defense sits near the bottom of FBS in pass rush and Line Yards. Even so, head coach David Braun's quarters-zone scheme limits damage where it counts, holding opponents to just four red-zone touchdowns all season by forcing stops short of the end zone.

Penn State vs. Northwestern Prediction

The current market lists the total at 46.5, with the Over pricing in around 48% implied probability. Action Network senior writer Collin Wilson, who has gone 76-47-1 over his last 30 days of picks, built his Week 5 model around Penn State's ground game.

Wilson points to Penn State running more than 80 zone-read snaps this season behind James Peoples, Carson Hansen, and Quinton Martin Jr., a concept Northwestern defends poorly. The Wildcats allow just a 41% success rate against zone read, which drops to 35% against 12 personnel.

He also flags Northwestern's upside through the air. Chiles has posted a 56% Success Rate on 90 snaps against the Cover 1 and Cover 3 looks Lynn's defense leans on, hitting a big play on 21% of those attempts.

Both offenses project to sustain drives, and neither defense looks fully equipped to stop the other's primary strength.
