Game 1 was closer than the final score suggests. Jesús Luzardo gave Philadelphia five innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts, and J.T. Realmuto's two-run triple put the Phillies ahead in the seventh before Atlanta broke through against the bullpen.
That late-game pitching remains Philadelphia's biggest concern. The Phillies entered the postseason with a 5.79 bullpen ERA since Sept. 1, which puts more pressure on Sánchez to work deep in Game 2.
Sánchez gives them a legitimate chance to do exactly that. He finished 18-7 with a 2.91 ERA and has 55 strikeouts across 49.2 career innings against Atlanta.
Mahle makes the other side more complicated. He posted a 5.13 ERA across 94.2 innings with San Francisco before joining Atlanta, then delivered a 1.99 ERA in nine starts for the Braves.
Philadelphia also managed three runs against Chris Sale in Game 1. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber now draw a right-hander in Mahle after opening the series against one of baseball's best left-handed starters.
