Regarding this market, both Downs and Bain Jr. are top talents who play coveted defensive positions. Read on for a breakdown of how people are trading and which outcome we may see come draft day.
Will Rueben Bain Jr. or Caleb Downs Be Picked First At The 2026 NFL Draft?

At the moment, Kalshi traders are slightly optimistic about Downs (55%) being selected ahead of Bain Jr. (45%).
This is a significant change considering traders were in on Bain Jr. at a 72% clip as recently as last Saturday (April 18th). On the other hand, this volatility can be expected as this market opened just last Thursday (April 16th).
As such, trading volume is only hovering around $1,600, currently making it a "thin" market. While the likelihood of each player being taken first has drawn closer, there remains a sizeable gap between the prices of each contract.
Traders looking to buy in on Downs would need to pay 77 cents for a "Yes" contract, whereas those interested in Bain Jr. would be buying the yes for just 46 cents. Conversely, a Downs "No" contract would be 45 cents, whereas buying the no on Bain Jr. would cost 68 cents.
At these prices, there's clearly a lot more value in taking shares of Bain Jr. than Downs. But is that the right move?
Is Caleb Downs A Better Prospect Than Rueben Bain Jr.?
The general consensus of scouts and other talent evaluators favors Downs over Bain Jr. as the higher-end prospect. On the other hand, position matters, and Bain Jr. is an edge rusher, whereas Downs is a safety.
Historically speaking, it's much tougher to find an elite edge than a safety. As such, NFL teams are far more likely to reach for an edge within the top 10-15 picks, and Bain Jr. is debatably the best of the three edge rushers in the top tier of this draft class.
Still, the Downs vs. Bain Jr. debate rages on since Downs could be enough of a generational talent to transcend that trend. Safeties are almost never taken in the top-10, with the last time being when Jamal Adams was taken sixth overall in 2017.
Another factor working in Downs' favor is his positional versatility stemming from his high football IQ. In past NFL drafts, the safeties with the potential to play multiple defensive positions have often been the ones selected within the first 10-15 picks.
Considering how closely ranked these two players are, it makes more sense to buy Bain Jr. "Yes" contracts simply because they're roughly 30 cents cheaper.
When Will This Kalshi Market Conclude?
According to Kalshi, this market is set to close and expire after the outcome occurs. The earliest this could happen is on Day 1 of the 2026 Pro Football Draft, which will take place on Thursday, April 23rd.
The draft is set to conclude on Saturday, April 25th, meaning that's likely the latest possible date an outcome will be established. The outcome itself will be verified by the Governing League.
