Chiefs vs. Seahawks NFL Preseason Preview, Picks

When it comes to preseason, we know how important it is to know which quarterbacks will be playing. Thankfully, we have a reasonable idea of what to expect on Friday under center for each team.

For the Chiefs, it seems unlikely that we’re going to see Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid has said that he’ll sit a couple of starters, and when talking about his QB, he said that “there’s a good chance he [Patrick Mahomes] doesn’t [play], we’ll see how it goes.” That means we’re going to see plenty of Gardner Minshew, Bailey Zappe and Chris Oladokun.

Zappe was horrible against the Cardinals last time out, throwing two picks, but Oladokun did get a special mention from Reid for his performance. We’re also likely to see Minshew see an increase in playing time, having received minimal last time out.

The offense as a whole looked poor in that defeat in Arizona, with the only touchdown pass of the day coming from Mahomes on his only passing attempt. The running backs were fairly productive when on the field, with Carson Steele, Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco all averaging over five yards per carry. However, Pacheco did have just the one rushing attempt.

On the other sideline, we’re going to see Sam Darnold suiting up for the first time as a Seahawk. He was rested, along with most of the starters, which means Drew Lock handling the bulk of his team’s workload, as well as a cameo from rookie Jalen Milroe.

We saw the best and worst of Lock during his time on the field, while Milroe is still a work in progress. However, the addition of Darnold does improve Seattle’s chances, hence moving from 2.5-point underdogs to favorites.

Chiefs vs Seahawks Predictions

It’s not just going to be Darnold representing the first stringers on Friday, with Mike Macdonald confirming that starters will play and saying that the offense getting preseason reps in this game will be the “best thing for us.”

With the Chiefs' offense looking anaemic, and Mahomes rested, it’s hard to see them putting up big numbers in Seattle, especially if Minshew gets the fewest reps of the remaining quarterbacks as he did last week.

The Seahawks did at least move the ball last week in their tie with the Raiders, with nearly 400 scrimmage yards.

Combine that with the addition of some starters seeing reps, and we should see the home team cover.

My Pick: Seahawks -3 (-110)
