Argentina Prediction

Head coach Lionel Scaloni's team continued with its blistering pace ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Already qualified for the tournament, Argentina showed no signs of slowing down in its last outing, comfortably outplaying a Chile team that was playing its last cards to make it into the final 48-team list.

With little to prove and even less to gain, Scaloni fielded a team with plenty of new options, as was the case with defender Leonardo Balerdi, midfielder Nicolás Paz, or forward Thiago Almada, as he inevitably ponders how much of a new cycle he'll need for USA, Mexico, and Canada 2026.

The coach has already confirmed that the rested star Lionel Messi will start against Colombia, so perhaps less of new blood starting 11 is the plan. Regardless, Argentina is unbeaten at home since a November 2023 2-0 loss to Uruguay. The record goes back even further when the Albiceleste plays at River's home, the Monumental, with that Uruguay defeat coming at Boca's La Bombonera.

Colombia Prediction

It's a much more difficult picture for the Cafeteros. Another team coached by an Argentine in the 1990 World Cup runner-up Nestor Lorenzo, Colombia started life in the qualifiers on fire. Unbeaten in eight matches, it secured four wins and four draws, including an iconic victory against Brazil and a 2024 Copa America final revenge against Argentina.

However, those times seem distant in the past, with the Cafeteros now winless in six games, having won just one in their last seven, and with a run of three straight defeats before a lackluster 2-2 tie against Paraguay at home.

The only good news for Lorenzo is the return of Liverpool star Luis Díaz from suspension, but without Jhon Duran, who left the Colombian camp after being substituted off at halftime during the last game.

Argentina vs Colombia Pick

This game comes at the worst possible time for Colombia, who would probably have taken an easier game to pick up some easy points instead. The pack behind them, with miracle-chasing, Bolivia hosts a virtually eliminated Chile, while hopefuls Venezuela visit an Uruguay in disarray.

It indeed appears to be a bleak proposition for the Cafeteros. Argentina can be a vicious team at home, where the roar of the faithful often elevates the Albiceleste to new heights; Brazil, who came on the wrong end of a 4-1 thrashing, can attest to that.

Messi's return also bodes poorly for Colombia. The world's greatest ever player hasn't been lighting up the season so far, but he'll be eager to show he's still not done and gift home fans another dream performance in what has to be one of his last ever official games at the Monumental. Even if he lacks that bit of pace and spring off the dribble, he'll get a few calls around the box, and his left foot is still every bit as lethal.
