Canada Preview

Canada did well to make it past an aggressive and determined El Salvador team on Tuesday, securing the top spot in their Gold Cup group for the first time since 2009. It takes Jesse Marsch's team to a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions. They've done so in impressive form, conceding just once in their three group stage games.

They'll look to make it one better, as Canada has failed to make it past the Gold Cup quarterfinals in seven of the last eight tournaments. That means, ironically, Les Rouges have the same number of Copa América semi-final appearances as in their home confederation competition over the previous 18 years. Their win on penalties against Venezuela in 2024 bodes well for their chances, while Marsch's team also moved past Suriname at that stage of the CONCACAF Nations League.

It's not all good news for Les Rouges. Jonathan Osorio will miss the remainder of the tournament with a lower-body injury, as will Ali Ahmed, who suffered an ankle strain.

Guatemala Preview

Guatemala saw its own kind of tough competition in its final group stage clash, fending off a determined Guadeloupean team who nearly came back from two goals behind.

It's the second consecutive time the Azul y Blanco make the Gold Cup quarter-finals, and their fourth in the last 25 years, including one in 2007 when they fell to none other than Canada.

Guatemala enters the series in shaky form, with a 5-3-1 record for 2025, mixing solid performances, such as a 2-1 win over Honduras and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with El Salvador, with a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Jamaica and a group stage loss against Panama.

Head coach Luis Fernando Tena is yet to win against a North American side since taking charge of this team, but his team did earn a 0-0 draw in their last meeting with Canada at the 2023 Gold Cup.

Canada vs Guatemala Prediction

The game against El Salvador showed that a physically aggressive style can hinder Canada, but it also showed that, by itself, it's not enough. The Rouges have 10 wins in 15 games in the head-to-head tally, with Guatemala claiming just two victories, and this clash isn't looking like the upset to turn the tide.

But I still expect a low-scoring affair. The last six matchups between these two have seen at least one side fail to find the back of the net. A one-goal margin has decided Guatemala's three games at this edition of the Gold Cup, a team that often fails to score in defeats. Canada's record of five consecutive clean sheets against the Azul y Blanco bodes poorly for their opposition.

It's been 20 years since Guatemala beat — and scored against, for that matter — Canada, so expect the run to continue. But it won't be a goal fest; four out of the last six matchups went under this line, another trend I can't see stopping soon.
