It was a relatively straightforward US Open debut for former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who took a 6-3, 6-4 win over Belgium's Greet Minnen to secure her spot in the second round.
The four-time Grand Slam champion is on a clear resurgence path in 2025, taking her first title since becoming a mother at Saint Malo and reaching the Montreal WTA 1000 final, where she fell to Victoria Mboko in a three-set battle.
Hailey Baptiste is in a different moment of her career, if perhaps on a similar trajectory.
The 23-year-old American is looking to improve her best result at her home major after failing to advance past the qualifiers last year. She had to work hard to beat 11-time Grand Slam doubles champion Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-3 for what was her first US Open main draw win.
Osaka and Baptiste have met twice in their careers, both times in 2025. Both matches went to Osaka, but neither was a walk in the park, with a 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-2 win in Auckland in January and a 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4 triumph in Miami in March.
The American has shown she can push the two-time US Open champion, and I don't see that changing. Osaka will endure, but she'll be pressured once again.
Pick: Osaka Moneyline and Over 21.5 Games (+138 via DraftKings)
Coco Gauff vs Donna Vekic Odds
Coco Gauff Odds | -900 |
Donna Vekic Odds | +600 |
Over/Under | 19.5 (-105o / -130u) |

Perhaps we should've known it wasn't going to be an easy debut for Coco Gauff after arriving at the US Open with a 4-4 record since winning the French Open. Her 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 win over Ajla Tomljanovic featured 10 double-faults, narrowly avoiding a second straight first-round Grand Slam elimination.
It wasn't an easy debut for Vekic either. She secured her second-round ticket with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro that featured 13 breaks of serve. A quarterfinalist in 2019, Vekic knows the feeling of winning in New York, but she is bound to face resistance against a home favorite.
Reaching world No. 1 for the first time could be within grasp — if slightly unrealistic — for Gauff, who would need to take the title and see Aryna Sabalenka lose before the quarters.
That starts with a win against a player who actually beat her the last time they met on hard court, at the United Cup in Australia. It'll be a different story in New York, but I don't think I'll be as comfortable as most expect.
Pick: Vekic +5.5 and Over 19.5 Games (+114 via DraftKings)
