Betting on golf is cruel.
Last week, Webb Simpson burned half of the golf-speculating world with a missed cut at The Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial. Not only was Simpson the most-owned player in DraftKings’ Millionaire Maker, but he was also a very popular pick among outright bettors.
This week, Webb bounced back with a victory at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, a course that plays similarly to Colonial.
Although Simpson remained very popular in betting and DFS circles for the RBC Heritage, you have to wonder how many people out there are kicking themselves for not sticking with Simpson after his stumble at Colonial. Luckily, GolfBet betting analysts Josh Perry and Bryan Mears were among those who hung with Webb following his MC.
After two tournaments in the South, The PGA TOUR switches gears a bit this week as we head north to Cromwell, Conn., for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

As you’d expect, Webb Simpson‘s odds have nosedived, going from +2800 down to 18-1 for this week.
Plenty has been made about course history over the past two weeks and if that’s your strategy this week then look no further than Bubba Watson, who has won three times at TPC River Highlands. Bubba checks in at 28-1 as he goes for No. 4 in Cromwell.
You knew that as soon as Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson showed any semblance of form their odds would come crashing down in a hurry. After getting as high as 45-1 last week, Brooks and DJ are listed at 20-1 and 28-1, respectively, for the Travelers.
Abraham Ancer was a couple of missed putts away from his first PGA TOUR win over the weekend but there’s a lot to like about the 29-year-old’s game at the moment.
Ancer led the field in Strokes Gained: Approach at Harbour Town and his ball-striking numbers were terrific at Colonial, as well. Bookmakers have taken notice of Ancer’s form and his odds have been cut all the way down to 33-1 for this week.
If you’re looking to follow the trend of betting on the guy who burned everybody the week before you should probably start with Sungjae Im. The talismanic South Korean had plenty of betting support at Harbour Town but never really got close to the cut-line and was sent packing early. Im can be had at 40-1 for the Travelers.
It feels weird that we haven’t mentioned the betting favorite yet, but that’s more of a reflection on how Rory McIlroy has played since the TOUR returned to action. McIlroy has had good days and bad days but the World No. 1 hasn’t really threatened the top of the leaderboard yet.
That being said, the Holywood, Northern Ireland native can run away with a tournament at a moment’s notice and is still a deserved favorite at 12-1 heading into a course that should fit him.
McIlroy is in familiar company atop the oddsboard. Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau are the next choices at 13-1 and 14-1.
