Most tournaments during the PGA TOUR’s fall swing were void of great star power, but Hero World Challenge is about to step in and deliver.
The tournament is extremely unique. It is hosted by none other than Tiger Woods and is driven by its charitable work. All proceeds from the tournament help the Tiger Woods Foundation, as well as the local community that hosts the tournament. After being held at Sherwood Country Club from 2000-13, it moved to Albany in the Bahamas in 2015.
Since it’s Tiger’s tournament, the best players in the world are always sure to come out, with 17 of the top 25 in the field.
The three who aren’t in that group are Patrick Reed (27), Justin Rose (47) and defending champion Henrik Stenson (179), who won the event back in 2019. It was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Because of the smaller field and charitable aspect of the tournament, it is not recognized as an official points event by the PGA TOUR. It does award points in the Official World Golf Rankings, though.
Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will travel to the Bahamas from their face-off in Las Vegas at “The Match V,” which was a blowout 4&3 win for Koepka. This will mark DeChambeau’s first tournament appearance since the Tour Championship back in September.
The player in the best form is probably Collin Morikawa. The 24-year-old phenom has made two starts on TOUR this fall, finishing second at the CJ CUP and T7 at the ZOZO Championship in Japan. Back on Nov. 21, Morikawa became the first American to win the Race to Dubai, which is the closing event for the European Tour. It capped what has been an incredible last 17 months for Morikawa, which includes a pair of majors.
A pair of Ryder Cup winners will play in their first tournaments of the fall, like DeChambeau, in Daniel Berger and Jordan Spieth. Berger broke through as a true contender on TOUR last season, while Spieth started regaining form that had left him for a couple years.
The Course
Albany Golf Course was opened in 2010 after being designed by four-time major champion Ernie Els. The course is over 7,400 yards and is a par 72.
Since the tournament moved from Southern California to the Bahamas, the winning score has gotten lower and lower. Only two of the final six winning scores at Sherwood Country Club between 2008-13 were better than 15-under par. The lowest score to win in the five editions of the tournament in the Bahamas is 18-under. Three times has the winner gone 20-under or lower.
