Randy Vasquez has been quietly pitching on borrowed time despite what his ERA suggests. He currently owns a 4.45 ERA, but the underlying metrics continue to paint a much uglier picture. Earlier this season, when his ERA sat at 4.17, his xERA was all the way up at 6.47. That tells you everything you need to know about the amount of luck he's benefited from. This also isn't anything new for Vasquez. Last season he finished with a respectable 3.84 ERA despite carrying a 4.85 FIP, 5.51 xFIP, and 5.44 SIERA. Every major ERA estimator viewed him as a pitcher who should have allowed well over a run more per nine innings than he actually did. We're seeing that same story unfold again in 2026. His barrel rate has climbed to 13.0% while his hard hit rate sits at 45.7%, both significantly worse than league average. Hitters are consistently making loud contact, and now the results are finally beginning to catch up as his ERA has already risen from 4.17 to 4.45 over his last several starts. Eduardo Rodriguez has been one of the biggest regression candidates in baseball all season. His 2.48 ERA looks incredible on the surface, but almost every advanced metric completely disagrees. Rodriguez owns a 4.81 xERA, 4.70 xFIP, and 5.02 SIERA, meaning every indicator believes he's been more than two runs better than he should be. That's one of the largest gaps you'll find among qualified starters this season. A huge reason for that has been an extremely fortunate .251 BABIP and an 86.9% strand rate, both well above his career averages. At 33 years old, it's highly unlikely Rodriguez suddenly discovered a new level. Instead, he's simply been on the right side of variance, and that's rarely sustainable over a full season. While he's still capable of pitching well, his margin for error is much smaller than his ERA would suggest. I also don't love either bullpen entering this matchup. The Padres bullpen has been worked heavily over the last few days and currently ranks among the most taxed relief units in baseball. If Vasquez struggles early, San Diego may be forced to rely on an exhausted bullpen for multiple innings. Arizona's bullpen hasn't exactly been reliable either. After Paul Sewald lost the closer role, the Diamondbacks have shifted to more of a committee approach in the late innings, creating even more uncertainty if this game turns into a high scoring affair. When you combine two pitchers due for regression with two less than ideal bullpen situations, I think this total sets up very well. Both starters have consistently outperformed what the underlying metrics suggest, and eventually those numbers tend to catch up. I'll back Over 9 Runs in this one.
