The Cubs and Pirates meet tonight from opposite ends of the NL Central standings, which puts this game among those that aren’t exactly expected to be thrillers.

It is, however, one that’s been interesting to analyze from a betting perspective, and The Action Network’s brand new PRO Report — which puts bet-vs.-money discrepancies, sharp action, PRO betting systems, power ratings and expert picks all in one place — has suggested that sharp bettors have found some value on both the side and total.

Let’s take a look.

Cubs vs. Pirates Moneyline

Early openers had the Cubs north of -200 tonight. And even with the high price tag, most bettors have been siding with the first-place team. As of the early afternoon, however, Chicago is down in the -180s across most of the market.

The PRO Report helps explain why:

Sharp Action

As you might’ve guessed, the line move away from the popular side is a pretty good sign that sharps are going against the public. In this case, Sports Insights Bet Signals — which track and record instances of market movement caused by professional action — have revealed two steam moves on the Pirates.

Steam refers to a sudden, drastic market change that comes from a heavy dose of money hitting the same side over a short period of time, and is strong indicator of sharp action.

Big Money

Another strong indicator? Big bets.

Of course, big bets can come from anyone, but over a large sample they’re more likely to come from sharp players. So when you see a side attracting a much higher percentage of money that actual betting tickets, that’s a good starting point for picking out the sharp side.

As for tonight, the 45% of bets on the Pirates have generated 80% of the cash hitting the moneyline.

Cubs vs. Pirates Over/Under

The line movement on the total has been a bit trickier to read, but the PRO Report once again has pinpointed the sharp side:

Sharp Action

As of 1 p.m. ET, three Sports Insight Bet Signals have been triggered on the under — all of which came at 9.5. And while it may not be obvious considering the current line still sits at 9.5, that action has resulted in some back-and-forth movement throughout the day — which is noteworthy considering that once again, it has gone against popular opinion (57% of tickets have landed on the over).

Even still, a few books are listing the number at 9, and those that aren’t have heavily juiced up the under, so don’t be surprised if this total falls again.

Big Money

The big spenders have also been on the under, and while it’s not quite the discrepancy we saw on the moneyline, the 43% of under bettors have still been able to generate the majority of money (53%), serving as another hint toward the sharp side.

Power Ratings

An added edge here? Our power ratings (assembled by Sean Zerillo) suggest that the total in this game should be down at 7.83, meaning there’s plenty of value still remaining on the under.
