Pirates vs Brewers Preview, Prediction
Is there any real value to betting against Paul Skenes? Probably not.
Sure, the Pirates are mediocre, but they’ve managed to win five of Skenes' last five outings.
After a dominant rookie campaign, Skenes has an MLB-best 1.86 ERA through 102 innings in 16 starts. He’s just 31 innings away from matching last year’s total, and he pitched in seven more games.
Skenes rarely has a bad outing. His worst outing of the year was allowing five runs to the Cardinals.
Beyond that, Skenes has one other outing with more than two runs allowed — three to the Cubs on May 1st. That means in 14 of 16 outings, the Pirates ace held the opposition to two or fewer runs.
I’m sure the Brewers aren’t excited to face Skenes. In two outings against Milwaukee, Skenes held them to seven hitless innings in 2024 and six innings with one run and eight strikeouts this year.
The Pirates offense is one of the worst in MLB. That's a byproduct of the ownership's unwillingness to allocate resources to improving the team.
They have a 76 wRC+ in June, which ranks 28th with the fewest home runs and a terrible .108 isolated power (ISO).
I'll buy some stock in the Pirates improving a bit at the plate. Their only everyday starter with a wRC+ better than 100 in June is Nick Gonzales.
Once Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz begin hitting again, I could see the Pirates ranking around 20th in wRC+. The lineup has plenty of dead weight, but Cruz and Reynolds can carry the Pirates' bats when they're hot.
That's the beauty of Skenes day. All it takes is one swing of the bat that drives in two or three runs to give Skenes all the run support to push through a strong seven innings before handing the ball to dominant relievers, Dennis Santana and David Bednar.
Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski has been nothing short of dominating in two MLB outings. So dominant that he didn’t allow a hit through his first 11 MLB innings, which broke a standing 125-year record.
The Twins hit a homer in his 12th inning to end the streak, but all good things must come to an end. Sure, Skenes was dominant from the jump, but that’s not even a record he could break.
I don’t expect the 6-foot-7 flamethrower to allow a bunch of hits moving forward. The one concern I have about Misiorowski is that his stuff is almost too electric that it leads to walks.
He walked 4.41 batters per nine in 13 Triple-A starts and walked five batters in his first two MLB outings. Between the elite strikeout rates and shaky walk rates, Misiorowski probably won’t provide a ton of length — especially if the Brewers want to play it safe with the Rookie of the Year favorite. The pitch count can get high quickly when strikeouts and walks are the main ingredients of a pitcher's diet.
Misiorowski has stuff straight out of MLB: The Show. It just doesn't seem possible for a pitcher of his size to throw 100+ with ease, while tossing in a 94-96 mph slider with absurd movement. He's a special talent, but he's still young. We can't forget that.
The Brewers offense is light years better than their opponents, ranking 11th with a 106 wRC+ in June. Milwaukee's offense has largely been carried by two players — Isaac Collins, who has a 187 wRC+ in 54 ABs this month, and Christian Yelich, who's back in MVP form with a 180 wRC+.
Three other players have a wRC+ better than 100, but none are above 115. That's a highly productive offense, but I'm not sure it's enough to derail Skenes.
Pirates vs Brewers Prediction & Moneyline Pick
I have to roll with Skenes here.
Misiorowski will be the ace in Milwaukee's future, but he's in just his third major league outing. It's not realistic to expect him to throw a one-hitter every outing, so he'll definitely face hardships.
As for pricing, when you see the Pirates -115 in a Skenes outing, you have to grab it. He's one of the best starters in baseball — if not the absolute best — and they just beat the Tigers in his last outing.
I'm at the point where if the Pirates are priced in the -115 to -140 range on Skenes day, it's a must take.
