Cardinals vs Braves MLB Betting Preview

Editor's Note: This written pick is a transcription from today's episode of the Payoff Pitch Podcast.

I took the Cardinals +140. I like them down to +130 — I actually make them around +120. It’s currently sitting right around +130, so there’s still some good CLV available, but not as much value as when I first bet it.

I really like this Cardinals offense against left-handed pitching. I liked Liberatore more earlier in the year, but his peripherals have come back down into the mid-4s range and he’s been getting hit harder in recent starts.

Martín Pérez is carrying an ERA near 3.00, but he’s overachieved by about a full run — his expected indicators are closer to 4.00. I give the Cardinals an A- contact grade and an A- power grade against lefties, though their plate discipline (Eye-rating) is only D+. Still, the batted-ball skills are there.

This is also a very strong defensive team. The Braves aren’t bad defensively, but I give the Cardinals the edge on offense. Atlanta has some speed and a little power, but their swing decisions aren’t great, and its contact rate is lower than St. Louis’.The starting pitchers are pretty even. Atlanta has the bullpen advantage, but with Ronald Acuña Jr. still out, I make the Cardinals roughly +120. I’ll take them up to +130.

At the current +130 price, it’s more of a 60-grade bet. I don’t like it nearly as much as I did at +140, but I would still take it at that number — provided we don’t see any key lineup absences.

Pick: Cardinals ML (+130 or Better)
