Colorado is Legal Statewide, Not Just in Casino Towns

Colorado's casinos only operate in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek, and sports betting licenses are tethered to those casinos' master licenses. But that is a licensing structure, not a geographic restriction on you. 

Once a licensed operator is running, you may place a mobile bet from anywhere inside Colorado: Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, a chairlift at Winter Park, or even an interstate rest stop. The casino town in your account paperwork is simply the master licensee your app is partnered with.

Can Out-of-State Visitors Bet in Colorado?

Yes, visitors staying in Colorado can create an account, deposit and bet entirely from their phone, with no in-person registration requirement. This is as long as they are inside the state when they do it. You need a Social Security number and government ID for identity verification like any other customer. The moment you cross the state line, your Colorado account stops accepting wagers. You can still withdraw funds from outside the state.

What Can You Bet on?

The Colorado sports betting board is broad. Sides, totals, money lines, futures, parlays, same-game parlays, live in-play betting and team props are all available across professional and college sports, along with esports and international competitions.

That said, restrictions are in place, such as high school sports being prohibited outright. Player prop bets on college events are not available in Colorado. You can bet the outcome of a Colorado Buffaloes, Colorado State or Air Force game. Also bet sides, totals and team markets, just not how many yards a specific college player gains. 

College betting is not a niche in Colorado. During the 2025-26 fiscal year, NCAA football drew $181,607,175, and NCAA basketball drew $173,628,920 to make a combined $355 million (about 5.5% of all money wagered in the state). The full sport mix from the Division's fiscal year report is worth seeing, because Colorado's does not look like other states':

Prediction Markets, Sweepstakes and Online Casino

Federally regulated event contracts offered by CFTC-licensed exchanges are accessible in Colorado. Prediction markets are not sports betting, as they are not licensed by the Division of Gaming. None of Colorado's consumer protections apply to them. Treat them as a separate category, not an alternative sportsbook.

Online casino gaming, including slots and table games, are not legal in Colorado either. Any site offering it to you as a Colorado customer is not licensed. Sweepstakes-model casino sites operate here, but are not regulated by the Division of Gaming and carry none of the protections a licensed Colorado sportsbook does.

Kalshi. This is my first suggestion to Colorado traders, as Kalshi has the deepest sports liquidity of any US exchange with coverage that runs well past sports into economics, politics and weather. The catch is the fee math. Taker fees peak around 1.75¢ per contract near 50/50 pricing, so the coin-flip markets people gravitate toward are the most expensive ones to hit.

Verdict: the most complete prediction market app, priced least favorably where you'll trade most.

Polymarket. Take advantage of market depth on marquee global events, the lowest taker fees in the US field (peaking near 0.75% on sports), and maker rebates that reward posting rather than taking. The limitation is that Polymarket US is a separate, thinner product from the international exchange Polymarket built its name on. As a result, the domestic catalog outside of sports is still filling in.

Verdict: the price-sensitive pick, provided the market you want has actually made it stateside.

ProphetX. Use this true peer-to-peer sports exchange where you set your own price, pay roughly 2% on winnings only, build parlays commission-free through its request-for-quote system, and never get limited for winning. The tradeoff is scale, as ProphetX is sports-only. Outside of NFL and NBA headline markets, you'll wait on a counterparty more often than you would on competing platforms.

Verdict: best structure in the market, thinnest books behind the front page.

Novig. The zero-commission angle is real, the sports-only focus keeps the app clean, and Colorado traders may recognize the name from its short run as a licensed CO exchange in 2024. Novig went live nationwide on Aug. 4, 2026, so anticipate wide spreads and slow fills until volume arrives.

Verdict: worth an account, not yet worth your main bankroll.

FanDuel Predicts. Feel comfortable with familiar branding, a clean app, and access to Fed decisions, CPI prints, index levels and commodities that no sportsbook offers. However, FanDuel deliberately withholds sports contracts in states where it holds a sportsbook license, so there are no game markets in Colorado. Additionally, a flat 2% fee applies on payouts and early sells.

Verdict: a macro-trading app in Colorado, not a betting alternative.

DraftKings Predictions. Finally, this betslip-style interface makes DraftKings Predictions the easiest entry point in the category for anyone coming from a sportsbook. The same Colorado limitations apply on DraftKings as they do on FanDuel. There are no sports contracts in-state, you keep a separate wallet from your sportsbook balance, and no parlays are available.

Verdict: the gentlest learning curve, with the least to trade in Colorado.

How Do You Place Your First Bet in Colorado?

The mechanics of Colorado sports betting are the same as in any legal state, meaning registration processes are short.

Step 1: Have your Social Security number, a government-issued ID and a funding method that is not a credit card ready before you start.

Step 2: Register from inside Colorado. Enter your legal name and address exactly as they appear on your ID, or verification will fail.

Step 3: Enable location services and, on desktop, install the operator's GeoComply plug-in. The app must confirm you are in Colorado before it will accept a wager.

Step 4: Deposit by debit card, bank transfer, PayPal or another wallet not funded by a credit card.  I recommend you suggest a deposit limit before beginning to bet as a good practice.

Step 5: Place your first bet. Check the same market at a second book first; the difference is worth more than the promotion.

How Are Colorado Sports Betting Winnings Taxed?

Two things changed for the 2026 tax year, and one long-standing Colorado rule catches high-volume bettors badly. Talk to a professional if you bet at any scale.

What Changed Federally in 2026?

• Losses are now deductible at only 90%. For tax years beginning Jan. 1, 2026, gambling losses are deductible at 90% of their value, still capped at the amount of your winnings. The practical consequence is that a bettor who breaks exactly even now owes federal tax on 10% of their winnings. 
• The W-2G threshold rose from $600 to $2,000. For winnings paid on or after Jan. 1, 2026, sportsbooks issue a Form W-2G at $2,000, where the payout is also at least 300 times the wager. The threshold is indexed for inflation. You will receive fewer forms; you owe tax on your winnings regardless of whether a form is issued. Separately, 24% is withheld when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000 and the payout is at least 300 times the stake.

You report gross winnings, not net profit. This means every winning wager is income, and your losing wagers are a separate deduction. That deduction is only available if you itemize. If you take the standard deduction, your losses do nothing for you and you are taxed on the full gross.

Is it Worth Betting $5 at a Time?

For the tax question specifically, yes, small stakes are fine. Fees do not eat small bets in Colorado; there is no per-bet charge and no state levy on you as the bettor. The 10% tax falls on the operator, not on you. What actually erodes small stakes is the vig, and that is a reason to shop lines rather than a reason to bet bigger. If you are betting $5 a game recreationally, the 2026 tax rules are unlikely to affect you at all, because your gross winnings will not approach the thresholds that cause trouble.

Where Does the State’s Money Go?

Colorado's 10% is distributed in a fixed order under section 44-30-1509: the Division's own regulatory costs first. 6% goes to the wagering revenue recipients' hold-harmless fund. Everything remaining to the Water Plan Implementation Cash Fund.

What are Colorado's Self-Exclusion and Responsible Gambling Rules?

Colorado runs a single statewide exclusion list, administered by the Division of Gaming. This is not a per-app setting. Registering once removes you from every licensed sportsbook (online and retail), and from every Colorado casino. Operators direct you to the Division's self-exclusion site rather than handling it themselves, and must update their systems within three business days of receiving an updated list.

You can Choose One, Three or Five Years 

There are three exclusion periods for you to choose from: one year, three years or five years. The lifetime option that Colorado previously offered has been removed. You may ask the Division to extend your period at any time; you cannot select a permanent ban at signup.

Nothing Happens Automatically When your Term Ends

No person is automatically removed from the exclusion list when their selected period ends. Your one-year exclusion does not lapse into a reinstatement. You remain excluded indefinitely until you affirmatively file the Division's Request for Removal from the Exclusion List form and the Director approves it.

If you want out before your chosen period is up, you’re allowed to petition the Director early. The Division may require a self-evaluation or an assessment by a professional, and early removal is entirely at the Director's discretion. If your petition is denied, you may not petition again for one year from the date of that decision. 

What Being on the List Actually Means

• You cannot place wagers or collect winnings at any licensed Colorado operator, online or retail.
• You forfeit money wagered after you were added to the list, and the operator keeps any winnings from those wagers. Funds sitting in your account that you have not actively wagered are yours to retain.
• You cannot redeem points, bonuses, comps or free play while excluded.
• Operators must scrub you from direct marketing entirely. This includes mail, email, phone, text and any other direct channel.
• Entering a retail sportsbook and betting while excluded means being escorted out, the incident being reported to the Division, and possible prosecution.
• Self-excluding in Colorado may place you on an operator's corporate exclusion list covering other states. The rule requires you be told before that happens.

Tools Short of Exclusion, and Where to Get Help

Every licensed Colorado operator must offer self-directed limits on deposits, wagers and time, plus timeouts, and must submit its responsible gaming strategy to the Division for approval. Set limits when you open the account as a best practice.

The state's resource hub is BetSmart.Colorado.gov, run by the Division of Gaming. Confidential help is available around the clock through the national helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER, by call or text. The Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado provides state-specific support and treatment referrals. Colorado's rules require every operator to display the 1-800-GAMBLER message on its site, app, kiosks and advertising.

How Do You Check if a Colorado Sportsbook is Licensed, And What if it Will Not Pay You?

The Division of Gaming publishes a live spreadsheet of every licensed sports betting operator at sbg.colorado.gov, with separate tabs for online and retail. If a site is not on that list, it is not licensed in Colorado, whatever its marketing says. Offshore books are not regulated here, and are not covered by the state's exclusion list or dispute process. The case against them is you have no Colorado authority you can appeal to.

What if a Book Refuses to Pay You?

Colorado gives you a real escalation route with a real decision at the end of it, but it has conditions. Missing them is the difference between a Division ruling and nothing at all.

1. Submit your dispute to the operator in writing, by mail or email to its customer service address. A wager settlement dispute is only valid in writing. A phone call is treated as a customer service complaint, and if it is not resolved on that first contact.
2. The operator must investigate and give you a written response within ten business days, stating its decision and telling you that you may appeal. It is also required to tell you that you have the right to contact the Division.
3. If the operator declines to pay and the dispute involves at least $1,250, you may submit your original written dispute together with the operator's response to the Division for review, in the form the Division prescribes on its website. The operator must also notify the Division immediately when it refuses to pay a disputed amount at or above that threshold.
4. The Division investigates, and the Director or the Director's designee decides whether the wager should be paid. Both you and the operator are notified within ten days of the investigation closing, and the Director issues an order.

Below $1,250, a submission is handled as a regulatory complaint rather than a wager settlement dispute, through the Division's patron complaint form. Accepting a complaint does not guarantee an investigation, and neither the Division nor the Limited Gaming Control Commission has authority to order compensatory damages or restitution. Note also that a complaint filed this way is not confidential and may be releasable under the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act.

Colorado Sports Betting Bet Types

Sports fans can wager on a full range of bet types, including:

• Point Spreads. Spread betting is a bet on the margin of victory in a game, or the point "differential." (See: Our Guide to Point Spread Betting)
• Money lines. Moneyline betting is when you pick the winner of the game or event, either one team or another. (More detail here: Money lines)
• First Half & Second Half. Halves let a bettor treat the first half and the second half as separate matches. (Additional insights: Half Bets)
• Totals. A total, also known as an over/under, is a bet on the number of points both teams will combine to score in a game. (See: Understanding Totals in Sports Betting)
• Futures. Future bets are a bet on an event that will be decided in the future (e.g., end-of-season results). (More: Longer-term Betting: Futures)
• Player Props. A "prop" bet, short for a proposition, is a wager that is not directly tied to the final score or outcome. (See: Everything to Know About Prop Bets) 

There are also no shortage of sports markets that bettors can take advantage of to make wagers, including:

What Changed in Colorado This Summer, and What it Means for You 

Recent legislation surrounding online sports betting in Colorado has been a hot topic. On July 1, 2026, the tax deduction which made promotional bets cheap for operators disappeared. On Aug. 12, 2026, Senate Bill 26-131 took effect. This banned credit-card deposits, capped deposits at six per day, and made Colorado the first state to prohibit sportsbooks from sending push notifications that solicit bets. 

The Tax Break that Paid for Your Bonus Bets is Gone

Colorado taxes online sportsbooks 10% of net proceeds. For years, every bonus bet handed to a player was partly subsidized by the state. Colorado has now dismantled that subsidy with House Bill 25-1311, which was signed by Governor Jared Polis on May 15, 2025. 

The State's Numbers Show What Happened

The effect is visible in Division of Gaming data, and it is not subtle. Betting Handle barely moved over the two most recently completed fiscal years. Tax collections jumped by more than a quarter.

Colorado bettors wagered 2.33% more and the state collected 28.21% more. Almost none of that gap came from bettors losing more. It came from a shrinking pile of promotional credits that operators could no longer write off. 

June 2026 is the cleanest illustration of how loosely tax now tracks betting volume. Betting handle rose 14.39% against June 2025, to $426,103,763. Tax collections fell 15.71%, to $2,595,955. Monthly tax follows what the books actually keep, not what you wager. A single soft month for sportsbook margin moves it more than a good month of volume does.

How Much Value is Left in Colorado Betting Promos?

My advice for you is to judge welcome offers on their terms, not their headline. A first-bet offer that refunds a losing wager in bonus bets with a short expiry and a playthrough condition is worth a fraction of its advertised number. 

Second, note that the Colorado gambling legislature bars sportsbooks from describing an offer as “free”. If an offer still uses that language, use that as a sign to not trust the sportsbook.

The Second Change: Senate Bill 26-131

Senate Bill 26-131, the Sports Betting Protections Act, was signed by Governor Polis on June 1, 2026. It became effective at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2026.

What the law does	Detail that matters
Caps deposits at six per gaming day	Six separate deposits from one individual per gaming day. The statute defines a gaming day as a continuous 24-hour period each operator sets for its own recording and reporting, so the reset time is not the same across apps.
Bans credit-card deposits	Applies directly and indirectly, expressly including deposits made through an account funded by a credit card. Funding a wallet with a credit card and then depositing from the wallet is covered. Violation is a class 2 misdemeanor, with a Commission penalty of up to $25,000.
Bans soliciting push notifications	The first such ban in the United States. Colorado's new statutory definition covers alerts and text messages delivered when the app's interface is not actively open on your device. In-app messaging while you are using the app is not covered.
Restricts advertising aimed at under-21s	Operators and their marketing affiliates may not target people under 21 or advertise on media whose majority audience is reasonably expected to be under 21. Public venues where crowd demographics cannot be determined are accepted.
Forces data into the open	Operators must give the Division full transactional data and metrics each year starting Feb. 1, 2028, with personal information redacted. The Division must publish a compiled report by Jan. 1, 2029 and every three years after.
Puts a floor under the water transfer	The annual transfer from the sports betting fund to the Water Plan Implementation Cash Fund may not fall below the previous fiscal year's transfer.

What Should Colorado Sports Bettors Do?

MY number advice for you is to shop lines. Colorado holds roughly a dozen licensed sports betting apps, remote signup is legal from anywhere inside state lines, and nothing prevents you from holding accounts at all of them.

Prices are not the same across Colorado sportsbooks. Two sports betting sites pricing the same Broncos spread at -110 and -105 differ by about half a percent of every dollar you stake on that side. Over a season of regular betting ,that gap is larger than almost any welcome offer out there. 

In my experience, running four or five accounts and taking the best available number on each bet costs nothing but a few seconds and some app-switching. 

Remember that multiple accounts mean multiple identity checks and more places your money sits. Plan how you want to fund your accounts responsibly rather than topping up impulsively.
