Clemson vs Stanford College Basketball Betting Preview

Clemson Basketball

Clemson continues to fly under the radar. The Tigers are 18-4 overall and 8-1 in ACC play, with all four losses coming by six points or fewer.

There's nothing flashy about this team. The Tigers' leading scorer averages 12 points per game, their offense sits in the middle of the pack in the ACC and they play at the slowest tempo in the conference.

So what does this team do well? They defend.

Clemson ranks first in defensive efficiency and 2-point defense in ACC play. Since the calendar flipped to January, the Tigers own the fourth-best defense in the nation and rank 17th nationally, according to Bart Torvik.

RJ Godfrey leads Clemson in scoring, but that’s not what makes him valuable. Godfrey can guard anywhere on the floor, holding opponents to 26-for-113 shooting (23%) on the season. According to Synergy, no one has scored on him over the last two games.

Though Clemson is going coast to coast for a conference game, defense travels.

Stanford Basketball

The Cardinal have dropped four in a row since their upset win against UNC and now sit at 14-8 overall and 3-6 in ACC play.

Ebuka Okorie went off against the Tar Heels, scoring 36 points to go along with nine assists.

However, despite scoring 26 points in the Cardinal's most recent game against Florida State, Okorie has struggled during their four-game losing streak, posting nine points against Duke, shooting 1-for-16 versus Cal and committing five turnovers at Miami.

The Cardinal have been one of the worst offenses in the country during this skid, ranking 342nd in effective field goal percentage, 281st in turnover rate, 337th in free-throw rate and 342nd in 2-point percentage.

Stanford moved Jeremy Dent-Smith into the starting lineup after he averaged 19.3 points per game on 53% shooting from the field and 55% from 3 over a three-game stretch. But in his two games as a starter, Dent-Smith is averaging just six points per game on 36% shooting from the field and 33% from deep.

The Cardinal need to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to create easier scoring opportunities without relying on Okorie to play hero ball.

Clemson vs. Stanford Betting Analysis

As much as I want to fade an away team traveling coast to coast, I don't trust this Stanford team to score the basketball right now, especially against a stout Clemson defense.

The Tigers like to apply full-court pressure on opposing ball-handlers throughout the course of a game to wear them down, and I expect Clemson to do exactly that against Okorie.

If you sleep with the TV on, I have the perfect game for you tipping off at 10 p.m. ET, as I expect this one to land firmly in the low 60s.

My Pick: Under 136
