Duke vs Pitt College Basketball Betting Preview
Duke Basketball
Duke surrendered just its second loss of the season and first in ACC play on a rivalry buzzer beater against UNC. The Blue Devils are now 21-2 overall and 10-1 in ACC action.
The Blue Devils held six of their last seven opponents to less than 70 points, as their dominant defense just smothers inferior foes.
They rank third in defensive efficiency, per KenPom. Opponents struggle to score on Duke's length, as opponents shoot just 45% from 2-point range. All eight members of the Blue Devils' rotation are 6-foot-4 or taller and all five starters are 6-foot-5 or taller.
With the duo of Cam Boozer and Patrick Ngongba II on the interior deterring teams from driving, they force teams to shoot 3s at a 44% rate.
Plus, Duke is great at avoiding fouls. It sends teams to the free-throw line just 23% of the time — the third lowest rate in the country. Pairing the rim defending dominance with the lack of fouls, you almost need luck to score on the Blue Devils.
Offensively, Duke can be a bit streaky. That sounds a bit strange given it ranks eighth in offensive efficiency, but the Blue Devils' shooting can be a bit concerning.
A lot of the shooting rests on Dame Sarr and Isaiah Evans. Evans is known as a marksman, but he takes some bad shots and hits 33% from deep. Sarr, a talented freshman wing, drills just 31% from deep, but he gets a lot of looks from Boozer in the post.
Boozer is the clear frontrunner to win National Player of the Year. The stud freshman averages 23 points and 10 rebounds per game, while shooting 57% from the field and 39% from deep. Teams love to double Boozer, and he's an elite passer; it just depends on whether Duke's supporting cast can hit shots or not.
Pitt Basketball
It's been a horrible season for Pitt, which sit at 9-15 overall and 2-9 in ACC play. The Panthers lost their last three games to Clemson, Virginia and SMU by double digits, so things are trending even worse.
The Panthers' talent level just isn't very high. They only have three double-digit scorers: Brandin Cummings (12.5 PPG), Cameron Corhen (12.3 PPG) and Barry Dunning Jr. (11.5 PPG). Corhen is probably the best of the bunch due to his interior scoring ability, but I doubt it'll matter in this matchup.
Pittsburgh is just 111th in offensive efficiency and 124th in defensive efficiency. It also ranks outside the top 200 in 2-point and 3-point field goal percentage on both ends of the floor.
The one thing I can say about Pitt is that it plays hard. That's why the Panthers grab offensive rebounds at 34% rate and hold teams to a 28% offensive rebound rate.
That only matters so much when its talent just doesn't compare to the better ACC teams.
Duke vs. Pitt Betting Analysis
I'm targeting the under. I'd be a bit surprised if Pittsburgh can reach the 60-point range against this Duke defense.
With all the offensive issues for the Panthers, I can't see them scoring easily in a half-court setting.
Then we take a look at the pace. Duke is just 264th in adjusted tempo and Pitt is 337th in adjusted tempo.
Duke is more than okay slowing the game down and dominating on the defensive end. I expect that to happen here on the road against Pitt.
My Pick: Under 136.5 (Play to 133.5)
