Norfolk State vs Arizona College Basketball Betting Preview
Arizona has been one of the most impressive teams in the country thus far, led by an incredible freshman class that plays far beyond its years.
Koa Peat has the physicality and body build of a 27-year-old NBA player in his prime. Point guard Brayden Burries has been steady, and German/Russian wing Ivan Kharchenkov has been better than advertised.
It’s all resulted in the Cats looking like a bona fide Final Four contender and threat to win the Big 12 title.
Norfolk State has been its usual self under Robert Jones, despite losing most of its roster from last season. It's competed in every contest, including a valiant effort in altitude at Wyoming last week.
However, Arizona is a different beast. This will be the first power-conference team and the first top-100 team the Spartans have played this season.
The paint and rim will be crime scenes this afternoon. Arizona is one of the biggest, most physical teams in the nation, while Norfolk is undersized. The Cats should dominate the offensive glass and earn countless trips to the line, as they bully their way to the bucket.
Peat should be able to name his numbers in the scoring and rebounding columns.
On the other end, good luck to Norfolk and its quest to score on the nation’s 10th-best defense. The Spartans can't shoot and must get the offense going towards the cup.
Unfortunately, Norfolk State is one of the worst finishing teams in the nation, ranking 353rd in field goal percentage at the rim, and Arizona is fierce inside with its depth and strength.
Norfolk’s only hope is to try to control tempo, take the air out of the ball and make this a half-court game. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly hard to control tempo when you're extremely overmatched physically, athletically and from a talent perspective.
Arizona should have no issue speeding up the Norfolk guards and forcing them into ill-advised shots. Just about every rebound should fall to the Cats, making fast breaks more likely to break out.
Jones is an awesome coach, but he’s not a miracle worker. He has a history of competing with better teams — losing by just 15 last year against Tennessee — but his squad this season is far worse, and Arizona is super explosive.
My Pick: Arizona -34.5
