Old Dominion Basketball

Old Dominion had a bit of a clunky roster coming into the season, and unsurprisingly, it hasn't translated into wins (the Monarchs are just 4-9). Still, KenPom believes in Old Dominion more than seven other Sun Belt squads.

Coach Mike Jones has a quartet of guards that look to control the offense. Top scorer KC Shaw adds 16 points per game, but he's a bit of a predictable scorer, going 0-for-11 from 3 so far.

Jordan Battle might be the most reliable of the bunch, as he drills 42% of his shots from deep.

To be honest, I expected more from Robert Davis Jr., who averaged 15 points per game last season. He's been a total net negative, shooting 29% from the field.

Plus, the Monarchs' interior scoring is non-existent, as they're shooting just 47.8% on 2s. They only shoot 34% from deep, which isn't good enough to make up for the guards taking ill-advised 2-point shots.

I think Old Dominion is bound to get worse than 223rd in defensive efficiency. The Monarchs have zero on-ball pressure, posting an awful 13% defensive turnover rate, and teams shoot 53% from 2 against them.

I have very little trust in Old Dominion being a good defensive team since those two figures are the two main predictive indicators for future defensive success.

Old Dominion ranks 48th nationally in 3-point defense, holding teams to 29% from deep. I'm not quite buying the Monarchs being an elite 3-point defense, and I expect that to change.

Maryland Basketball

Maryland might be the worst team in the Big Ten, but without star center Pharrel Payne, it's definitely the worst. Payne went down with a leg injury 15 days ago against Michigan, so we'll see if he comes back for this one.

The Terrapins are 6-6, and their best wins came against UNLV and Marquette.

In the two games sans Payne, Maryland was lights out from deep. The Terps went 12-for-27 from 3 against Mount St. Mary's and 12-for-29 against Virginia.

I expect Maryland to overwhelm Old Dominion with its length. Even with Payne potentially out, the Terps start a trio of 6-foot-7-plus players, George Turkson Jr., Elijah Saunders and Solomon Washington. The length will help Maryland maintain its 34% offensive rebound rate, even without Payne.

Plus, Maryland is one of the best teams in America at getting to the foul line, ranking ninth in KenPom's FTA/FGA metric.

The guard play will have to be strong for the Terrapins. David Coit is equally as likely to erupt for 30 as he is for 10 points. The 5-foot-11 guard is speedy and can drill shots from deep, but he needs to be a consistent scorer.

Keep an eye on freshman Darius Adams. It's been an uneven freshman season for the top-30 guard. He's shooting 31% from the field and 24% from deep, but he's getting to the foul line almost seven times per game. Now coming off the bench, Adams can be a sparkplug.

The Terrapins' defense is pretty mediocre, ranking 98th in defensive efficiency. I could see things slightly improving, as Maryland is due to improve from its 38% 3-point defense.

They'll likely have to push the pressure defensively. The Terps have an 18% defensive turnover rate, and Old Dominion gives the ball away 16% of the time.

Old Dominion vs. Maryland Betting Analysis

I'm looking to back the Terrapins here.

In seven of Old Dominion's 13 games thus far, it played teams ranked between 24th and 120th in KenPom. The Monarchs lost all but one of those games by double-digits, and the non-double-digit defeat was by nine points to Richmond.

Maryland will be the next one to win a game by double-digits. The Terrapins are 13.5-point favorites (as of writing), and I think they have enough to overwhelm an Old Dominion squad I have zero faith in.

My Pick: Maryland -13.5 (Play to -15)
