San Diego State vs Utah State College Basketball Betting Preview

San Diego State Basketball

San Diego State comes into this game 15-5 overall and 9-1 in the Mountain West. After a 3-3 start to the season, the Aztecs have found their groove, winning 12 of their past 14 games.

The defense has been the story of their turnaround.

San Diego State has no problem full-court pressing its opponents. The Aztecs show a 1-2-2 zone and get back into man defense when the offense crosses half-court.

In conference play, the Aztecs rank among the top four Mountain West teams in four defensive categories (turnover percentage, 2-point percentage, block percentage, steal percentage).

Miles Byrd averages 11 points per game, scoring in double figures in eight of the past nine, but it's his defense that I want to highlight. The Aztecs switch one through five on defense, and Byrd may be the best on-ball defender in the Mountain West.

On the season, opponents are shooting 34-for-118 (28.8%) from the field when guarded by Byrd, which equates to 0.71 points per possession.

Utah State Basketball

Utah State has won two in a row and now sits at 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the Mountain West.

The Aggies are led by two scoring guards in MJ Collins Jr. and Mason Falslev. Collins leads the conference in points per game at 19 on 53%/42%/84% shooting splits, while Falslev ranks sixth in scoring at 16 points per game on 53%/39%/78% splits.

Both score, but they have two different styles.

Collins doesn't do it often, but he is one of the best in the country at shooting off the dribble. On the season, Collins is 25-for-45 (55.6%) on dribble jumpers, putting him in the 98th percentile (per Synergy).

Utah State's offense is a well-oiled machine, ranking first in the conference in offensive efficiency.

What makes this offense so difficult is that it's comfortable playing at any pace.

In the last game against Wyoming, the Aggies scored 94 points. In the game before that, they scored 65 against Colorado State while shooting 50% from the field, forcing 21 turnovers and outscoring the Rams 17-0 in fast-break points.

San Diego State vs. Utah State Betting Analysis

In this matchup, an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

Utah State's offense against San Diego State's defense will be a fun chess match to watch.

Smith Spectrum Arena is one of the toughest places to play, and with Utah State losing to UNLV at home two weeks ago, I don't think the Aggies let it happen again.

Finally, Action PRO is tracking a signal on sharp action coming in on this Aggies ATS pick, giving us an additional edge of confidence.

Utah State's offense will continue to click, even against this San Diego State defense, and the Aggies will make key stops to win and cover the spread.

My Pick: Utah State -5.5
