UAB Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 9-3
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 7-5
  • Conference: Conference USA
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 79
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 5
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 78

Analysis: UAB got blown out in the conference title game, but put together another impressive season under coach Bill Clark. The Blazers continue to reload and produce on defense. They ranked No. 3 overall in success rate and were top five against both the pass and the run. Offense is where UAB never really got going. Star running back Spencer Brown, who had 2,500 yards combined in the last two years, suffered from injuries and ended up at just 3.9 yards per carry and fewer than 500 yards during the regular season. The Blazers were one of the most inefficient offenses in the country. Clark will be a desirable candidate for a number of jobs this December, but he’s got this program built the right way just a few years after it was shut down. — Steve Petrella

Appalachian State Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 11-1
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 8-4
  • Conference: Sun Belt
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 33
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 23
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 82

Analysis: With an offseason Vegas win total of 9, expectations were set pretty high for Appalachian State heading into the year. Obviously, the Mountaineers had no trouble exceeding them. They ran through the Sun Belt with relative ease, dropping only one regular season game to Georgia Southern on a schedule that included meetings with both North and South Carolina. They finished the regular season ranked No. 28 in overall SP+ and No. 21 in the College Football Playoff rankings. They were also pretty well-balanced, posting top-35 numbers in both offensive (33rd) and defensive (23rd) yards per play, and just edged out Louisiana-Lafayette as the highest-scoring offense in the conference (38.9 points per game). –Danny Donahue
