Texas Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 7-5
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 6-6
  • Conference: Big 12
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 32
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 105
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 12

Analysis: A disappointing season for Tom Herman has plenty of coordinators and assistants out of a job. This should add additional noise to the bowl game, as Herman will spend his time on the recruiting trail up and through the signing deadline of Dec. 18. The break until the bowl game should serve as a much needed recovery for an oft-injured roster. Texas was highly efficient in the run and pass game on offense with a rank in the top 30 for finishing drives. The defense was often inefficient against offenses with a high passing success rate. In Tom Herman’s two Bowl games with Texas, the Longhorns defeated both Missouri and Georgia as an underdog. — Collin Wilson

Utah Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 11-1
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 9-3
  • Conference: Pac-12
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 9
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 4
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 72

Analysis: Before the Pac-12 Championship Game, there were so many glowing things to write about Utah. The complete defense and massive front seven. Quarterback Tyler Huntley’s efficiency. But none of that played out against Oregon, as the Ducks ran the Utes off the field at Levi’s Stadium. Still, the season-long metrics are impressive against pretty weak competition if you’re into that sort of thing. The Utes entered the Pac-12 Championship Game top eight in points per possession on both offense and defense. The defense was the best in the nation at limiting big plays. Kyle Whittingham is one of the best coaches in the country and has shown his prowess in bowl games, going 10-2 straight-up and 8-4 against the spread while at Utah. — Steve Petrella
