App State vs Coastal Carolina College Football Preview

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview: Push the Pace
App State is coming off a homecoming loss to Old Dominion last week in a game that was played in rain and wind, which affected the play of both teams.
Ball security was a major issue, as several turnovers impacted productive drives. Special teams miscues also ensued due to the poor weather.
The 10-3 loss could be even more costly for the Mountaineers, however, as starting quarterback Malachi Singleton was injured on a run play late in the fourth quarter and did not return.
He's questionable for this contest pending an MRI, which has been conducted, but the results have not been made public.
Henry Hasselbeck has played in all six games this season, but the junior quarterback has completed just six of his nine passes for 45 yards.
Hasselbeck has a running element to his game, rushing for 105 yards this season. He's unproven as a passer, and the Mountaineers would likely lean on the ground attack more if Singleton is unable to go.
App State ran 72 or more plays in each of its first three games of the season but did throttle it down against ACC foe NC State, in addition to the game played in poor weather last week.
I could see the offense throttling up the tempo in this game, playing an opponent that has gotten the best of App State over the last couple of seasons.
The defense has played decent football, and timely turnovers have really helped this group. The Mountaineers have allowed just 138 rushing yards per game and 3.5 yards per carry.
While the secondary has a knack for getting torched in between the 20s, eight interceptions have helped keep opponents off the scoreboard.
This team has been in close games every week since the opener against Maine, and I expect another close battle on Friday night.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview: Deuces Wild
Coastal Carolina broke through against Marshall on the road last week, notching its first conference win of the season by a score of 27-21.
The Chanticleers forced an incredible six turnovers, including three interceptions of Marshall quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson en route to building a 27-0 lead by the end of the third quarter.
The defense did give up 505 total yards to the Thundering Herd and has surrendered 441 yards per game against FBS competition this season.
Each of the last four games has seen opponents average 6.3 yards per play or better, and there's a real likelihood that the turnover magic runs out and Coastal finds itself having to win shootouts down the stretch.
The defense doesn't register enough Havoc to consistently get its opponents off the field, and I could see that being an issue against App State here.
The offense has been boom-or-bust, and quarterback Deuce Bailey is the greatest example of that.
Bailey has thrown 13 touchdown passes against just three interceptions while chipping in 192 yards on the ground. His dual-threat play frustrates every defense the Chants face.
Fumbles and missed throws have plagued this offense, along with a high propensity for allowing negative plays, which often stall drives.
If Bailey can hit open receivers more consistently and the offensive line can hold up, this could end up being a fun offense. But Coastal needs more consistency and needs to start holding onto the football.

App State vs Coastal Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis
This game opened with App State listed as a short 1.5-point favorite, and the line has hovered there and at -1 most of the week. The total comes in at 48.5, and I like the over in this matchup.
Coastal Carolina’s defense has been shredded this season, and the defense has had to defend its own red zone 14 times over the last three weeks.
It has given up only six touchdowns and the turnover luck has been on the Chants' side, but that's eventually going to change.
App State is going to move the football, and I anticipate the rushing attack to find success here. Coastal has allowed 217 yards per game on the ground on six yards per carry over its last three contests.
The Mountaineers' defensive metrics are aided by playing three poor offenses in Maine, Charlotte and Old Dominion.
This defense has given up points and yardage against competent offenses, and I expect a game where Coastal Carolina connects on some deep shots while having 3-4 opportunities in the red zone.
This Chants offense connected on big plays against Liberty a couple of weeks ago in a game that saw 51 combined points. It was Liberty that fumbled twice in the red zone, leaving more points on the field.
At home against Georgia Southern the following week, Coastal fumbled on the goal line heading in for touchdowns not once but twice in a game that ended 31-24.
Last week against Marshall, those teams combined to have four drives end with “goal-to-go” situations that resulted in zero points in a game that ended 27-21.
Coastal games have had a tremendous amount of activity in the red zone and numerous scoring chances that have floundered. I think that gives us some value on the total.
I expect these teams to cash in while in the red zone and for points to light up the scoreboard.
Pick: Over 48.5
