Where Coastal Carolina stands

Tim Beck went 20-19 across three seasons with three bowl appearances, and it was not enough. He finished the 2025 regular season 6-6, and Jeremiah Johnson took the bowl game as interim, a 23-14 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl. The final record was 6-7 with a 5-3 conference mark.

The standard is what makes that insufficient. Jamey Chadwell went 31-7 from 2020 through 2022, winning the Sun Belt championship in 2020 and producing back-to-back 11-win seasons, before leaving for Liberty. This is only the 10th year of Coastal Carolina football at the FBS level, and expectations have already outrun the program's history.

Ryan Beard takes over at 37 after three seasons at Missouri State, where he went 19-16 and finished 7-5 in 2025 during the program's first full FBS campaign. He brought 11 assistants with him, including offensive coordinator Nick Petrino and defensive coordinator L.D. Scott. Not one member of the staff has Sun Belt experience.

The roster turned over just as thoroughly. More than 50 players arrived through the transfer portal, junior college or high school signing. Safety Xamarion Gordon, a second-team All-Sun Belt pick who led the team with 71 tackles, exhausted his eligibility, as did linebacker Dontae Lunan.

Three players earned preseason All-Sun Belt recognition, all on defense.

The quarterback job is open between Deuce Bailey, who followed Beard from Missouri State and knows the system, and Trever Jackson, a dual-threat option from Arkansas. Three quarterbacks tried and failed to hold the position in 2025.

The Sun Belt East in 2026

Texas State left for the rebuilt Pac-12 and Louisiana Tech arrived from Conference USA in the West Division, with the two-division structure intact. Coastal Carolina remains in an East Division alongside James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, App State, Georgia Southern and Georgia State.

The Chanticleers were picked fifth in that seven-team division, and conference championship odds sit around +2000 with James Madison a heavy favorite at -235.

The non-conference draw is more manageable than it looks. West Virginia opens the season on Sept. 5 with the Mountaineers favored by 21.5 points, but FCS Fordham went 1-11 last year, Delaware finished 7-6 in Conference USA, and Liberty slumped to 4-8. Three of those four are winnable.

The finish is the problem. Coastal closes with road trips to Louisiana on Nov. 21 and James Madison on Nov. 28.

Books set the win total at 4.5, with the over around -150 and the under around +115.

The over case is the front of the schedule. Six of the first 10 games are at Brooks Stadium, and the early slate offers three realistic non-conference wins. Getting to 4-1 or 3-2 before conference play deepens is achievable, which puts five wins within reach before the November road trips.

The under case is the sheer volume of change. A first-year head coach, 11 assistants with no Sun Belt experience, and more than 50 new players is about as much roster and staff turnover as a program can absorb in one offseason. Prediction models have been harsh, with at least one projecting 2-10.

That uncertainty is itself the useful information. When a team changes this completely, preseason numbers rest on very little, and the range of plausible outcomes is wider than the 4.5 suggests in either direction.
