Boston College vs Pitt Preview

Boston College Eagles Betting Preview: From Hot Start to Cold Reality
It was a hot start to the season for quarterback Dylan Lonergan and Boston College. The Eagles scored 40-plus points in back-to-back games, and it appeared Lonergan was the right choice.
But the past two games saw the wheels fall off with poor defense and losses to Stanford and Cal.
Both starting cornerbacks, Amari Jackson and Syair Torrence, missed the past few games. Despite the deficiencies, neither opponent was able to throw much against Boston College — instead, opponents dominated on the ground. To make matters worse, starting linebacker Daveon Crouch missed the last game.
The injuries don't stop on defense. Starting left tackle Jude Bowry, one of Boston College's best players, missed the Cal game with an injury and is questionable heading into Week 6. Missing the starting left tackle for a team that throws with the second-highest frequency in the FBS is a big loss.
Lonergan cooled off from his hot start, throwing three picks and one touchdown in his last two starts (plus a rare rushing TD). Bad play calling hurt the groove of this passing offense, but Lonergan isn't without blame for a couple of those interceptions. With more tape out, defenses will continue to employ what stalls the Alabama transfer.
There are some good defenses on the slate coming up, too. This week, Boston College visits Pitt (23rd in Success Rate), Clemson (41st), and Louisville (28th).
Clemson jokes aside, where does Boston College's first FBS win come from? Beyond those three teams, the Eagles host UConn, Notre Dame, SMU, and Georgia Tech before visiting Syracuse to close the season.
There's no end in sight, and most of Boston College's winnable games are in the rearview mirror with few wins to speak of.

Pittsburgh Panthers Betting Preview: Injuries Derail Momentum
Speaking of teams on a downward slide, the last two outings have seen Pitt suffer outright losses to West Virginia (as a 7.5-point favorite) and Louisville.
The offense stumbled without star running back Desmond Reid, an absence that bled over into the throw game. Eli Holstein was benched late against Louisville after throwing two interceptions, giving way to Cole Gonzales (who wasn't any better).
Pitt throws with the 10th-highest frequency in the country, due in part to offensive coordinator Walt Bell, but also due to a thin running back room that lacks a ceiling without Reid. Last week, the Panthers fronted just 80 yards on the ground.
Like its Week 6 opponent, Pitt is missing some key pieces. Beyond Reid, starting corner Tamon Lynum hasn't played since Week 2 and starting left guard Keith Gouveia was carted off last game with an apparent lower-body injury.
On the aggregate, Pitt's defense has been fine without Lynum. But when the game's counted, it's not been good. Pitt allowed a horrific West Virginia offense to march down the field and tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Last week, Pitt allowed 14 fourth-quarter points to Louisville and completed the fumbling of a 17-0 lead.
Throughout the rest of the game, Pitt ranks near the best in the FBS on early downs and in the front seven (stuff rate, line yards). It has benefited from inopportune turnovers against weak opponents, a well that may run dry soon.
A trendy preseason darkhorse pick (hand up, myself included), Pitt looks like a possible collapse candidate. Left on the slate includes Florida State (away), NC State (home), Notre Dame (home), Georgia Tech (away), and Miami (home), as well as a cross-country trip to Stanford.

Boston College vs Pitt Pick, Betting Analysis
This line saw substantial movement very shortly after opening. Pitt opened a 3.5-point favorite and jumped to -6.5 while the total rose from 53.5 points to 58.5 by Wednesday morning.
This game features two teams that struggled over their last few games, combining for a 0-4 record with losses to subpar opponents.
But when comparing the two, there's more to like about Pitt, especially on defense, and more concerns about Boston College on offense.
In addition to its reliance on the pass, Boston College rushed for just 56 yards against Stanford (23 attempts), 67 yards against Michigan State (25 attempts), and 97 yards against FCS Fordham (40 attempts).
Pitt counters with a respectable, if not inopportune, defense, especially on the ground.
If you opt to watch the entirety of this game and no other, make sure you have a comfortable seat and plenty of snacks. With two of the most pass-heavy offenses in the country (BC: second, Pitt: 10th) and two inconsistent quarterbacks with recent struggles, we're in for a long football game.
And that long football game might make this play uncomfortable, as I'm taking under a total that's moved too far north.
There'll be lots of plays, plenty of possessions, and likely a few sweat-inducing moments, but these are two teams that haven't been playing very well lately.
Lonergan and Holstein are both talented, but Pitt benching him in the last game of a tight contest was concerning, and Lonergan is prone to making some pretty bad plays. I don't have much faith in the BC offensive play calling, either.
Outside of end-of-game scenarios, Pitt's defense has been up to the task, and this isn't its toughest offensive opponent.
Combine those concerns with Reid's ankle injury, and a coaching staff may be hesitant to give him a full workload with Florida State in the window, and under the point total is the play for me here.
Not the most fun bet to make given some of the prospects, but this sounds like a painfully inefficient game to me.
Pick: Under 58.5
