To say that the Georgia Bulldogs took care of business in Saturday's Orange Bowl against Florida State would be an understatement of all understatements.

Georgia walloped the Seminoles 63-3, putting up a winning margin that was far more than double the closing 23.5-point spread. And before the Orange Bowl was even over, fans found themselves wondering just how Georgia might have performed in the College Football Playoff.

Yes, the Dawgs lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Yes, a win over the Tide would have rendered this entire conversation unnecessary. But there's still very much an argument to be made that Georgia was one of the top four teams in the country this season and should have been in the College Football Playoff.

If Georgia had made the postseason, it could have been at the expense of Texas, which will take on Washington in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Sugar Bowl on Monday.

As it were, our college football power ratings would have Georgia as a 3-point favorite on a neutral field vs Texas, which might suggest that the Dawgs might in fact be the better team. Conversely, if Georgia had made the playoff over Washington, this would be the projected spread for Georgia vs Texas.

Of course, Texas also beat Alabama 34-24 back in Week 2, and Alabama beat Georgia. And while this part of the debate will be rendered pointless by next year's college football playoff expansion, Alabama coach Nick Saban said on Saturday that expanding the playoff to 12 teams won't snuff the debate around who should be in:

"There's always going to be speculation of who the best 12 teams are just like there's speculation now who the best four teams are."
