How Kansas State Reached the Texas Bowl

If quarterback Skylar Thompson was healthy throughout the season, the Kansas State Wildcats could’ve been a top-tier team in the Big 12 this season.

Thompson got injured in the second game of the season against Southern Illinois, and he returned for the game against Oklahoma in the midst of a three-game losing skid for the Wildcats. It took him a few games for Thompson to become himself again. After that losing skid, the Wildcats went 4-2 to close out the season.

Kansas State beat the teams it should have in the Big 12 and lost to top-tier teams such as Baylor, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Thompson finished the season throwing for 1,854 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Wildcats’ star this season, though, is running back Deuce Vaughn, who ran for 1,258 yards this season with 15 touchdowns while averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

The Wildcats had a 7-5 record on the season, becoming bowl eligible for the second time in Chris Klieman’s three years at the helm. They went 6-5-1 against the spread.

How LSU Reached the Texas Bowl

Calling LSU’s 2021 season tumultuous is putting it kindly.

Between injuries, transfers and head coach Ed Orgeron agreeing to step down after the season, the Tigers naturally never found a groove.

A 49-42 upset of Florida in the middle of the schedule kept a program that won the title only two years ago from a six-loss streak in conference play.

The offense scuffled, especially after losing star receiver Kayshon Boutte. With him sidelined, LSU topped 28 points just once over six games.

It’ll be a new era in Baton Rouge under head coach Brian Kelly, who was hired from Notre Dame following the regular season. He took the Fighting Irish to the Playoff in 2018 and 2020.
