Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview: Will Energy Carry Over?

The Hokies won their first game last week against Wofford under interim head coach Philip Montgomery, but their season has been disastrous overall.

The biggest concern heading into Raleigh is on the defensive side of the ball. They will have challenges against a lethal Wolfpack passing attack.

Defensively, the Hokies are among the worst teams in the nation in terms of EPA/Pass allowed, entering the matchup at 133rd. They also rank outside the bottom 100 in Available Yards Allowed and Early Downs EPA/Play.

That is a recipe for disaster against the Wolfpack offense, which has been shredding defenses all season. There was a jolt of energy after head coach Brent Pry was fired, but I don't expect that to carry over into this matchup.

The Hokies generate a decent amount of pressure, which should bode well against a shaky NC State offensive line. But we must remember that NC State quarterback CJ Bailey can use his legs well, as he consistently moves outside the pocket.

I'm not sold that the Hokies' trench advantage will be enough to slow down the NC State offense, as they've allowed far too much explosiveness to my liking. They must keep up offensively to keep it a close contest.

This is a strong matchup for quarterback Kyron Drones, the team's leading rusher, but he'll need to generate more explosive plays to give his team a chance on Saturday. The Wolfpack's defense has been pushed around, so they must ensure that each time they get the ball, it results in a scoring play.

NC State's secondary has been a disaster thus far, but I don't think the Hokies' offense will be able to keep up.

Since the market has already begun to stream towards the Wolfpack, I'm staying away from the Hokies.

NC State Wolfpack Betting Preview: Points Galore?

The Wolfpack lost a challenging game last week at Duke in a high-scoring contest. Fortunately, they draw a juicy matchup against a terrible Virginia Tech defense.

Entering the matchup, the Wolfpack are 28th in EPA/Pass and top-50 in Available Yards, despite their underwhelming running game.

Bailey is a dynamic dual-threat who has been electric with his arm and legs. He is completing 72% of his passes and has chipped in three touchdowns on the ground.

The Wolfpack should be able to generate a ton of explosives down the field through Bailey's arm and take advantage of a secondary that has been abused thus far.

They have also been outstanding on the ground, as running back Hollywood Smothers is one of the most under appreciated backs in the country.

Between Bailey and Smothers (four rushing touchdowns), the Wolfpack will have ample options to take advantage of the Hokies all afternoon.

Defensively, it has not been lovely thus far. The Hokies are missing some pieces in the wide receiver room, but their secondary could be at risk of being shredded again.

Their defense has been stout on early downs, and they have done a decent job stopping the run at times, but they have been exposed through explosive plays on the ground and in the air.

There could be some positive fortune for the defense, but I still see too many holes in the secondary that cause concern.

However, I think their offense will do enough to pull away from the Hokies. They should be able to score almost every time they touch the ball.

Virginia Tech vs NC State Pick, Betting Analysis

Instead of targeting the spread, my favorite bet for the matchup is the NC State team total over. I have no idea where the Hokies are mentally, especially given that their head coach has already been fired.

Perhaps Montgomery provides a morale lift in the locker room, but this is their first real game under his helm.

The defense has far too many issues, and if you remember, they allowed Old Dominion to trounce them two weeks ago.

Bailey and Smothers should be able to create plenty of explosive plays, as I expect their offense to continue to roll. I'm too skeptical about the Wolfpack defense, where a backdoor cover is possible.

I'm not overthinking this one. Given the matchup and their performance thus far, I'll gladly trust the Wolfpack offense.

Pick: NC State Team Total Over 34.5
